Golf Range Finder

How far? It’s the most asked question on a Golf course because knowing the distance is often the key to making your shot count. After all, without knowing the distance how would you know which club to swing with? The 6 iron or the 7? You might have heard that Golf Range Finder are useless and are gimmicks to make you spend on toys you don’t really need. Well, we beg to differ.

Golf Range finder allow users to get a quick and accurate distance estimate – Just like in war movies where you see a sniper’s assistant looking through a device and then tells the range to the shooter, then the shooter does some adjustments to his rifle scope and bang, his target goes down.

A Golf Range Finder definitely can’t be compared to a military’s but what it does is makes you gauge the distance better than your naked eye, or in some cases you see people using their thumbs. It helps you to better decide which club to use, how hard to swing and hopefully bring your score down (in golf down is better).

We have shortlisted 3 Golf Range Finders for you which we think are the best and are available on Amazon and store outlets. They will be reviewed on various criteria such as accuracy, features, price and tournament legality.

Golf Range Finders prices in the market typically range from $100 – $800 and unless you’re a pro golfer, you might want to go for the less expensive ones. Our 3 shortlisted candidates for this round are the TecTecTec Vpro Dlx Golf Rangefinder, Laser Link Red Hot 2 Rangefinder and the Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder.

  • 6x monocular/magnifier with multilayer coated lens
  • Measurements in yards and meters
  • Tournament legal
  • Waterproof

The popularity of the VPRO DLX is on the rise even though it has only been on the market for a few months which is probably owed to the reputation of the previous VPRO 500 model. Not only is it completely waterproof, one notable feature of the VPRO DLX is the distance range measurement of up to 600 yards with an accuracy of +/- 1 Yard. It’s pretty impressive compared to other rangefinders on the market at a similar price.

The VPRO DLX weighs 7.8oz, comes with a battery, carry bag, strap, microfiber cloth and a 1-year warranty by TecTecTec.

Pros:
Not only does it have a modern design, users of the VPRO DLX also found the Golf Range Finder to be very comfortable when held in the hand. Since it has only two functioning buttons, it is much easier to use then others. Objects appear clearer thanks to its multilayer coating on the lens and the plus point of it being waterproof, allows users to use it even under the rain.

Cons:
We did notice that when aiming at long distances and especially if you have shaky hands, you will find it hard to get a reading. The flag seeker mode also turns off by itself, so if you haven’t gotten a lock on your measurements, you will find yourself toggling back and forth into the mode quite frequently.

Laser Link Red Hot 2 Golf Range finder

Features:
  • Distance to any target up to 1,000 yards on the golf course with accuracy of +/- 1 yard
  • Pistol-shaped for ease of use
  • Red Dot Aiming System featuring the Zero-In Alignment Aid. Large, easy-to-read external LCD
  • 3 measurement confirmation settings – Audio, Silent, and Vibrate
  • Measures in yards or meters
  • Tournament legal
  • Water resistant

The first thing you will notice about the Red Hot 2 rangefinder is its impressive distance measurement range of up to 1,000 yards with an accuracy of +/- 1 yard. The pistol like grip that Laser Link is known for is still being adopted in this model, with a little redesign in its rubber shaped handle to make it more ergonomically friendly.

Weighing at just 6.4oz with battery and 5.3 x 2 x 3.1 inches, it is considerably lighter than its predecessors. The Golf Range Finder also comes with a carrying case, 9-volt alkaline battery and 1-year warranty by Laser Link.

Pros:
The red dot in the viewfinder and pistol holding grip makes it easier for aiming. Distance lock on confirmation comes with a sound or vibration which can be switched on or off by the user.

Cons:
The current market of Golf Range Finder typically carries magnification capabilities which many have gotten used to, but the Red Hot 2 doesn’t provide. The cost of this rangefinder does seem to be a little high comparing it’s features with its competitors.

Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder

Features:
  • Distance of 5 – 1,000 yards, 400+ yards to a flag with accuracy of +/- 1 yard
  • PinSeeker with JOLT technology
  • 5x Magnification with fast focus system
  • Ergonomic design with Stabi-Grip technology
  • Measurements in yards and meters
  • Tournament legal
  • Water resistant

Bushnell is a very familiar brand name among golfers who have used Golf Range Finders. Bushnell is well known for their laser rangefinders designed for golf. When the company unveiled the Tour V4 in early 2016, they introduced the JOLT Technology inbuilt into the device.

Do not confuse this model with its twin version, called the Tour V4 Slope which compensates for slopes and adjusts your measurements accordingly. The Tour V4 Slope is only tournament legal when the Slope Mode is disabled.

During golf sessions, golfers using rangefinders tend to measure and re-measure their distances to the target multiple times, just to ensure that they are getting consistent readings on their distances. The JOLT Technology coupled with the pin sensor in the Tour V4 eliminates the need for multiple measurements by giving off a vibration, once the distance to the target has been accurately acquired.

Pros:
Gripping the rangefinder is very easy because it’s really small and light. Sizing at just 3.11 X 1.57 X 4 inches and weighing 6.6oz, this Golf Range Finder really does punch above its weight. Not only is it easy to slip it into one’s pocket and take it out only when necessary, but also without having to walk and play with something bulky in your pockets certainly has its advantages.

The JOLT technology works by giving out a vibration when you have successfully measured the distance to the target and not the background around it, which is really important. The Tour V4 also displays measurements in yards and meters which leaves a versatile choice for golfers who are used to either type of measurement.

Cons:
It isn’t waterproof but only water resistant. So if you happen to be using it under the rain or drop it in a puddle of water, you might have a nasty chance of ruining the laser. Also, if you are used to the other rangefinders which allow up to 6x magnification, you might need to adjust your eyes to the 5x magnification. There is only one button on the Tour V4 which controls everything on the device. From toggling between modes of measurement to aiming the laser at the target, one might need a bit of patience to get used to it.

Buyer’s Guide to choose the best Golf Rangefinders

Apart from the price that is within your budget, there are many more factors you should consider when purchasing your rangefinder.

Well, the first and foremost criteria to consider is the range distance of the rangefinder. Majority of rangefinders in the market have range distances of up to 1,500 yards, so this roughly gives you a gauge of what you’re getting for the dollars you are paying. You also have to consider the weather conditions that you are going to be using the rangefinder in. For example, all Golf Range Finder work very well in clear weather conditions but what happens if it starts to drizzle a little? Will the laser be able to reach its target? Doing your research by reading user reviews is one way you can find out about the performance of the model you’re intending to get.

The second thing you should look out for is the features of the product. Features such as the pin sensor or JOLT technology by the Bushnell Tour V4 will certainly come in handy when measuring at long distances. Magnification is the other thing you should definitely consider. Imagine yourself looking at a distance of 800 yards at a flag with a 1X magnification, even if you manage to sight the flag, you can’t be too sure that your sights are pointing directly at where it should be aimed (think 6X sniper rifle scope VS normal rifle sights at 800 yards).

The size and weight of a rangefinder is one of the more overlooked factor when it comes to the decision – Imagine having to lug a 1kg 6” X 6” box around in your pocket or strapped to your waist, sure you may lose a few more calories, but you’re going to hate yourself for spending a couple of hundred bucks on that no good piece of (insert choice of word here). Size and weight. Keep that in mind.

Now let’s assume that right now you’re at a store comparing the VPRO DLX, Red Hot 2 and the Tour V4.

While all of them have their own distinctive qualities, the Red Hot 2 and Tour V4 tie at the top of the list for measuring distances at up to 1,000 yards and the VPRO DLX second, at 600 yards. All 3 rangefinders have the same accuracy of +/- 1 yard, are tournament legal and can measure in yards or meters.

The VRPO DLX comes in top for magnification at 6x, followed by the Tour V4 at 5x and the Red Hot 2 last with no magnification capabilities. The VRPO DLX comes in again at the top for its waterproof capability as compared to its rivals’ only water resistance levels.

The Red Hot 2 and the Tour V4 both have vibrating alert functions for taking measurements, the VPRO DLX has none. The Red Hot 2 weighs the lightest at 6.4oz, Tour V4 second at 6.6oz and the VPRO DLX last at 7.8oz.
All 3 models carry different features – The VPRO DLX has a flag seeker and a pin sensor, the Red Hot 2 boasts a red laser dot sight with an external LCD and the Tour V4, its JOLT technology as well as a pin sensor.

So now that you’re about to make a choice, which should you buy?

Considering the price, features and usability on a golf course, if the TecTecTec VPRO DLX Golf Range Finder, Laser Link Red Hot 2 Rangefinder and the Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder were all laid out in front of us right now and we had to make a choice, the money would very well go to the Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder.

With a price tag slightly more expensive compared to its rivals with the VPRO DLX and RH2, you will not only be getting a brand with a strong reputation but also, a rangefinder that packs the most punch in such a small package. Pushing it to the top is it being able to measure distances of up to 1,000 yards coupling it with its JOLT and pin sensor technology, which means you only need to measure accurately once and be confident of your shot.

Being accurate and not having to take multiple measurements also mean that you can instead take the extra time to concentrate on your shots. Now that is going to save you a lot of time, frustration and energy in the game. Also, not forgetting the looks on your opponents’ faces when you have already gone on to the second hole and they are still stuck at the first, sticking their eyeballs into their rangefinders trying to get an accurate measurement.

Overall, the market of rangefinders is extremely extensive. If you’re just starting out on golf and you aren’t very sure that you’re going to be playing this game for a long time, we suggest you go with something cheaper.
