Not every neighborhood in Belgrade has sidewalks. We don’t have them where our house cleaning office is located; However, we wish we did. Sidewalks suggest fun and safety to us and our family. We’ve got a young son who will soon be riding a bike, and we really wish he could learn on a sidewalk in front of our house. Talk about a possible great memory! But there are plenty of houses in Belgrade that DO have sidewalks. But, when it snows, many of these walks get buried and only reappear in May. That’s too bad, and it’s against Belgrade city code.
Did you know that clearing snow from the sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner to maintain, not the City? In fact, here are the specific rules related to property owners in Belgrade and their sidewalks:
1. Sidewalks must be cleared of snow by noon of the next day.
2. Snow cannot be moved or shoved onto the street or any public area or access. It should stay on your property.
3. There are fines and penalties for failure to shovel. The City of Belgrade charges a minimum of $60 to shovel, on top of this, you could be fined $25 to $50.
4. The property owner is also in charge of controlling ice on the sidewalk. If you’ve got ice, it’s you responsibility to use sand or deicer.
5. The city asks that you also clear any fire hydrants, handicap parking, or emergency access on, or near, your place.
If you have any questions about snow removal, the City of Belgrade asks that you call either Public Works at 406-388-3783 or the Community Services Officer at 406-388-3711.

Belgrade is a great small town with great amenities in town and near by. You can find everything you need in town. However, if you’re looking for more things to do there are plenty of options. With a short drive you can go to see the Bobcats play at Montana State University, shop in Bozeman, hike in the hills, or fish in 30 different places along the Gallatin River. With a little longer drive you can get to great skiing at Bridger Bowl and Big Sky, go see bears and wolves in Yellowstone National Park, or drive in any direction to find blue-ribbon fishing in many of Montana’s great lakes and rivers. Montana has many great small towns to explore, but for us Belgrade is the epicenter of it all.
