How I fixed my 6 qt. Kitchenaid Mixer

Hi friends,

My mixer died (again). I use it a lot when with my weekly baking.
Below is the post I made last time I fixed it and show step by step how to open it up. Like I explained in the post, the problem was a couple of gears but this time was worse. The gearcase was broken.

The process is the same, just need to remove everything attached to the gearcase (6 screws) remove the case from the stand (3 screws), get the new part, attach everything back and you are done.
If you have the parts, it shouldn't take more than 40 minutes total.

Here is the post that explain how easy it is. Ask me in the comments part if you have any question.

I have a small Artisan and a bigger Professional Kitchenaid mixers. The big one stopped working several months ago so I started using the small one. Of course the small one died too. So I decided to fix the 6 qt Professional one.

The problem that it had was a couple of gears (the mixer was on but the planetary couldn't move or if it move, you could stop it without effort).

I'll show you step by step how to do it.
Tip: take pics of everything, you could need it if you forget any gear position.
Note: sorry about the first pics taken with my cell phone.

1) with the mixer unplugged (of course) remove the trim band unscrewing the screw located on the back.

2) remove the four screws on the sides.

3) there are four screws that need to be removed to free the transmission cover.

4) with the cover removed, you can start checking for damaged gears. I did remove the worm gear just pulling it up. It was in good condition so I kept it.

You can see the bevel gear is damaged also the attachment hub level gear is replaceable.

5) in order to check every single part of the transmission box, you will need to release the retaining clip (see pic)

6) remove bevel gear. Below you'll find a pin, push it with a nail and pull it.

7) you'll able to remove the worm follower gear. First you need to gently hit the planetary shaft down with a hammer. If you are going to keep it put a piece of wood between the shaft and the hammer so it won't be damaged.

With all the parts on hand you can determinate what is needed. In my case just a couple of gears (lucky!). I order them online at www.ereplacementparts.com and in a couple of days got them in my mailbox.

Now is time to clean, assemble and lubricate.

8) here are the old and new parts.

9) now you need to clean all the old grease because it is contaminated with small metal particles.

10) like this is how the pieces look when they are clean and ready to re assemble.

11) it's time to put the worm gear together.

all the parts need to be greased and be sure that the concave side of the "washers" goes against the bearing, one on each side.

12) put back the planetary assembly, worm follower gear and retaining pin.

Be sure that the pin (1) is parallel to #2 because the bottom part of the bevel gear have to fit there.

Bottom side of bevel gear, note the shape.

13) slide bevel gear over the worm follower and secure with the retaining clip.

14) put the attachment hub level gear on place (inside the transmission cover), add a generous amount of grease in it.

15) add another generous amount of grease inside the transmission box, move by hand the motor to make the grease cover all the gears. Align the transmission cover and gently make it fit. You could need to work with the gear located on the cover. Adjust the screws, put back the motor housing, screws, trim and the last screw.

16) run the mixer on high for several seconds to distribute properly the grease.

Note: is really important to apply grease on every piece you are assembling.

Spinning like a pro!
You are done, enjoy your mixer!!!

Please let me know if you have any question about this repair.
