How to Recycle: A Beginner’s Guide

Welcome to Bay Disposal’s blog. Each week we research tips, tricks, facts, and more to help educate and inform the well-intentioned heroes of solid waste disposal: the Recyclers.

Let’s Save the World Together!

In an effort to maximize our recycling efforts as a community, we’re taking a closer look at how to use the Recycling Binwhether it’s at work, at home, or while you’re out and about. Sometimes you may find yourself standing by that blue bin, staring at the item in your hand with uncertainty as you wonder: can I recycle this?

How To Recycle:

GLASS:

  • Did you know that glass is infinitely recyclable?

METAL:

  • Take a 2nd look at tin foil—it can often be rinsed and wiped clean for reuse.

PAPER: Paper Towels & Plates without grease or food residue, notebook & printer paper, wrappers, cardboard, cartons, magazines, envelopes, phone books, etc. belong in recycling.

  • Most paper is recyclable but not stained, greasy, oily, or food-smudged paper.
  • Click Here to learn more.

PLASTIC: Baggies, Bottles, Jugs, and food containers must be clean of food residue and placed in recycle bin.

  • Check for the triangular classification; if it’s #1 PET, #2 HDPE, or #5 PP then recycle!
  • Click Here to learn more.

Please DO NOT attempt to recycle the following:

  • Food & other “wet waste”
  • Plastic wrap
  • Pizza boxes
  • Styrofoam
  • Grocery bags
  • Containers from which all residue cannot be removed

One improperly-disposed-of item can spoil an entire truckload of otherwise recyclable goods. None of us want that to happen, so let’s take a 2nd glance before tossing our waste into either bin. Could that item be recycled, or is it better placed in the trash?
