VW makes multi billion investment in new pure electric models

The Volkswagen Group, made up for VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Bentley amougsts others is firmly trying to put the recent diesel scandal behind it, with a Chairman Matthias Müller declaring:

“We have got the message and we will deliver”.

Müller was speaking about delivering a raft of pure Electric and plug-in hybrid models across all brands by 2025, with around a quarter of new Group vehicles – up to three million units a year – possibly purely battery-powered by 2025, all the banner “Roadmap-E”.

Roadmap-E reaches across the VW Group of brands

This will be achieved with over 80 models made up of 50 purely battery-powered vehicles and 30 plug-in hybrids.

Additionally a commitment has been made for over 300 models across the group in all markets to be offer an electric option by 2030.

These is certainly a bold claim.

Muller was speaking at group’s press preview event the evening before the opening of the Frankfurt Motorshow. He continued stating:

“The transformation in our industry is unstoppable. And we will lead that transformation. This is not some vague declaration of intent. It is a strong self-commitment which, from today, becomes the yardstick by which we measure our performance,”

To achieve this, the new initiative has over €20 billion assigned to it to fund two entirely new electric platforms, upgrades to production plants and staff training in charging infrasture and the selling of electric cars.  Additionally funds will go towards research into battery technology and production.

Batteries

Reaching these claimed sales figures will need more than 150 gigawatt hours of battery capacity annually by 2025 for its own e-fleet alone. This is equivalent to at least four gigafactories for battery cells.

To meet this demand, the company has put one of the largest procurement volumes in the industry’s history out to tender totalling over €50 billion where the group is looking towards new battery technology such as solid-state.

All of this certainly puts other brands recent vague claims in the dark.  Give your thoughts below.
