2017 Frankfurt Motorshow is set to be electrifying – here’s our preview

The phrases “electrified” and “electric cars” have made the headlines for most of 2017. The Frankfurt IAA Motorshow opens it’s doors to the public on Thursday 14th September, you can be sure all things Electric will be filling the halls as more and more manufacturers focus on electric and connected motoring.

Here is a round up of the electric car concepts and autonomous technology we expect to see, no doubt there will be some surprises to catch us out too.

AUDI

The premium end of the VW Group is to show 2 concepts capable of level 4 and 5 autonomy.  One based on the Audi e-tron Sportback concept powered by 3 electric motors and the 2nd top end Model powered by four motors and offering a range of upto 497 miles.

BMW

The recently revised i3 and sporty sibling the new i3S will be making their public debut, along with concept that could become another member of the BMWi family.  The new 4 foor coupe model sits between the i3 and i8 and is assumed to be the much rumoured i5, yet the shape of the car beneath the blue cover is something different… Additionally the show sees the official debut of the i8 spyder.

CHERY

Newcomer Chery of China are set to show off a pre-production compact SUV that will be available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric drivetrains.  A member of the Geely group is start sales of passenger cars in Europe within the next few years under an all-new nameplate, also to be revealed next week.

HONDA

Honda is using Frankfurt to Debut a new electric urban concept along with a Hybrid CRV, the SUV model that is no longer available with a diesel engine.

LONDON ELECTRIC TAXI

The all-new electric London Taxi from the Geely backed London Electric Vehicle Company will be sold throughout Europe and across the world.  The car will make its international debut at the Frankfurt Show where executives declare “we will have significant news to share at the IAA”.

MERCEDES

The vast Mercedes stand will show many concepts, including a stunning drop-top version of the Maybach 6 along with a new member of the EQ range, Mercedes’ electric brand. The compact EQA is set to tackle the mainstream end of the car market.

MINI

An electric Mini has been confirmed for production in 2019 and will manufactured in Oxford, England. MINI are using this years event to show off a dramatic design study for the new Model and their stand will feature the recently launched Countryman S E Plug-in Hybrid.

RENAULT

Renault is due to present its ‘vision’ for 2030 in an innovative format – a first at any motor show, little is known…

SMART

The Smart Vision EQ fortwo concept is the German brands new vision of urban mobility. An individualised, highly flexible autonomous concept vehicle that picks up its passengers directly from their chosen location.

VOLKSWAGEN

VW confirms the attendance of an update to the SUV ID CROZZ that we have seen before.  Yet rumours suggest another ID model is set to debut, this time a saloon.  This will no doubt look similar to the sleek ID models of before.
