Australian hemp stakeholders have set an inaugural hemp conference Feb. 27–March 2, 2018 at Rydges Geelong, Victoria in South Australia.

Australia is a rapidly advancing market for Industrial Hemp. This past April both Australia and New Zealand opened their markets for hemp foods with the go-ahead from a bilateral Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation. Foods from the hemp seed are just now becoming legal for human consumption in Australia.

New industrial hemp framework

In South Australia specifically, the new industrial hemp framework aims to combine industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis into one portfolio to create new opportunities for Australian companies across the food, fiber, and medical sectors.

The Industrial Hemp Association of Victoria, AgriFutures Australia and the Australian Industrial Hemp Alliance are working jointly to stage the the Australian Industrial Hemp Conference, which they say will be bi-annual and aims to attract Australian hemp companies as well as international visitors.

Speakers are sought

The conference is a platform for growers, researchers, processors and end-market buyers to present and discuss concepts, key issues, hot topics and the latest findings in growing, producing, and the marketing of all types of industrial hemp products, the organizers said.

The group is seeking potential presenters who can talk about: Regional production practices, breeding, new cultivars and THC testing; crop care including water, nutrient, weed and pest management regimes; harvesting and early-stage processing; grain storage, processing and products; fiber processing and products; and hurd processing and products. Abstracts are due Dec. 15, 2017.
