HEALTH CARE FOR NO ONE!

HEALTH CARE FOR NO ONE!

I can’t help but jump in on this health care reform issue.

What is going on at the Supreme Court proves once and for all that we are incapable of governing ourselves in a rational manner. We allow ourselves to get bogged down in “nuances”, dissecting itty, bitty little words to the point of distraction. It’s like when President Clinton said in his Monica Lewinski deposition: “It depends what is, is.” So, the question comes to mind, what the does broccoli have to do with anything? That statement, coming from a Supreme Court Justice, was a bit over the top.

The only question on the table (although I fear there is a larger political agenda going on here) is whether a mandate to buy Health Insurance is a good thing, period. We talk endlessly about bringing down the cost of health care and yet we have identified one of the major problems: people who ignore their responsibility and opt out of buying insurance causing those who do buy insurance to pay for the freeloaders; those leaches (yes, leaches) who believe it is perfectly okay to game the system anyway they can. Wow, that was easy. Who would have thunk it?

The argument that some cannot afford health insurance doesn’t wash either. It has been made clear time and time again that government assistance (a subsidy if you wish) would be available for certain low income brackets. I find that fair despite those who turn up their noses at any subsidies other than those for oil & gas, farmers, big corporations—you get the point. It is okay to dole out billions to the greedy capitalist but it’s not okay to assist individuals in need. It is okay to toss out a mandate that everyone have health insurance, but not okay to protect those who buy insurance and have to pay for those who don’t. What in the hell are we thinking?

The blame for this mess has been laid at President Obama’s feet and maybe to some extent that is fair. But the real blame belongs to the political goons in Congress who have the authority to fix the health care law without getting the partisan Supreme Court involved. But noooo, they would rather throw out the baby with the bath water purely for political gain rather than to serve the American public.

A few months back I had a muscle biopsy. Although the surgeon told me it would only take all of ten minutes as an outpatient procedure, it would have to be done in a hospital under anesthesia. The hospital bill and the doctor’s fees came to just over $6,500.00 – FOR A TEN MINUTE PROCEDURE! How many deadbeats did I have to pay for?

And what about the charge that this mandate infringes on our freedom? Really? Making everyone participate in a program that affects the health of our nation is an infringement on freedom? Wow, bring out the National Guard! I guess those poor folks in Massachusetts lost their freedom when Governor Romney signed into law pretty much what Obama did nationally. Oh, but that was somehow different.

This whole debate like so many others is stupid! Humans create problems and humans are capable of coming up with reasonable solutions – that is, if you have reasonable humans debating the issue. We do not have reasonable humans in Congress.

Once again, in all of the Supreme Court’s wisdom, we’ll probably end up with a decision that splits the baby in half or they’ll simply toss it back to Congress. Then somewhere down the line—when we are still arguing over this issue—we’ll look back and say, “What the hell have we done?”
