Conservatives looking for a new nominee

As the White House tries to recover from Harriet Miers' withdrawal as a Supreme Court nominee, conservatives are swinging into action to make sure that the new candidate has solid conservative credentials. Back in the 2004 election, judicial nominees played a large part in Bush's vote, with conservative groups supporting him on the account of his conservative values. The White House has yet to give any clues to who they are going to nominate, leaving conservative groups concerned. Democrats are urging President Bush to take his time and to look within the current judicial system to find an experienced judge.
Bush will struggle to keep all parties happy here. His conservative support base will not be pleased with another choice like Miers, and yet the democrats are hoping for a more moderate candidate to unite the country, not fraction it further. Democrats feel that the choice should be non-partisan, while conservatives will not be satisfied unless they get a conservative behind the bench
To further complicate matters, O' Connor requested that she be replaced by a women, an idea supported by the First Lady Laura Bush as well. Although Miers satisfied both as a choice, her dropping out leaves the White House in a scramble to garner support on all sides. Conservative groups feel that gender should play no part in the process, with values and experience being the only important factors..

For now, Bush has some tough decisions on his hands...It will be interesting to see how the White House appeases all the different factions pulling for different values..
