In Honor of Sandra Day O'Connor

Sandra Day O'Connor, trailblazer, intellectual, a spirited orator, and the first Woman to serve on the Supreme Court

Sandra Day O'Connor is an incredibly intelligent woman who attended StanfordUniversity. She received a B.A. degree in economics and continued on to Stanford's School of Law. She graduated second in her class and set the standards incredibly high for any woman (or man) that follows in her footsteps.
Sandra Day O'Connor received the prestigious appointment to the Arizona State Senate where she served two terms for a total of four years starting in 1969. Not only was she the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court but; she was also the first woman to serve as State Senate Majority Leader (1973) in any state!
August 19, 1981President Regan, may he rest in peace, started the nomination process to appoint Sandra Day O'Connor to the United States Supreme Court. She replaced Potter Stewart and was confirmed on September 21, 1981. She was well received by the United States Senate and was confirmed with a unanimous 99-0 vote.
Due to her case-by-case approach to reviews and her moderate political views, she was the deciding vote on many cases especially during her final years on the bench. In 2004, Forbes Magazine called her the fourth most powerful woman in the United States and the sixth most powerful in the world. She carved the path that other woman such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1993) would follow to also be appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
On July 1. 2005, Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement from the Supreme Court, effective upon the confirmation of her successor. On October 31, 2005, President GeorgeW.Bush nominated SamuelAlito to replace Sandra Day O'Connor.
