Australian votes to same-sex marriage

Celebrations erupted across Australia after a two-month national postal survey was "massively" in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.

The results released Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that 61% of the population voted for same-sex marriage, against 38% of voters.

More than 12.7 million people across the country, or 79.5% of the population, participated in the survey and all states and territories obtained a majority "yes". Celebrations, songs and tears hailed the announcement in Melbourne. This is the beginning of the end of a long-term campaign to allow marriage equality in Australia, which is already legal in most English-speaking countries of the world.

People in the crowd celebrate when the result is announced in Melbourne on November 15th. Speaking after the result, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm said it was "overwhelming" in favor of "yes" and called for same-sex marriage to be legalized before Christmas. "They voted" yes "for justice, they voted" yes "for the pledge, they voted" yes "for love, and now it's up to the Australian Parliament to move forward,"
