Floods: 1.2cr people affected, death toll rises, train services hit

  • Heavy rains and floods continue to batter the eastern and northeastern parts of India. Over 1.2cr people have been affected, and the death toll continues to rise in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.
  • All trains to the northeast have been cancelled till August 20. Services are likely to be canceled further.
  • In Meghalaya's West Garo Hills, 1.2 lakh people in 136 villages have been affected.

  • 123 people have died in Assam. 33.45L people in 24 districts are affected. Dhubri and Morigaon are the worst-hit.
  • 304 relief camps have been set up.
  • The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level in at least eight districts, but has receded in Dibrugarh. Flooding has also reduced in Kaziranga.

  • In Bihar, woman delivers child on rescue boat

  • In Bihar, the toll stands at 72. Over 73L have been affected. At least 14 districts are inundated.
  • About 4L have been evacuated.
  • On August 16, a woman delivered a child on a rescue boat.
  • In WB, 32 people have died. Over 14L people in six districts have been affected.
  • Over 1,400 relief camps have been set up by the government and NGOs.

  • In five hours, Bengaluru receives highest rainfall in 127 years

    Meanwhile, Bengaluru received the highest rainfall (12.8 cm) in 127 years within just five hours on I-Day. Electricity lines snapped, streets were flooded and trees uprooted at Koramangala, HSR Layout, Jayanagar, BTM Layout and other parts. The situation remains grim in Uttar Pradesh too.

  • Over 130 people have been killed in floods caused by incessant rains in Bihar and neighboring Nepal.
  • The floods have led to the evacuation of nearly 98 lakh people across 18 districts in Bihar.
  • Another 40 lives have been claimed by floods in UP.
  • Despite the floods, the larger central Indian region faces a 58% monsoon deficit while India's deficit stands at 5%.
