Pet Odor: How to Get Rid of It for a Better Smelling House

Although we love our pets, we all know that they can be a little stinky sometimes. Whether they rolled in something smelly and brought it in the house, or had an accident on the carpet. No one likes smelling a stinky dog when they come into your house. If you have started to notice Pet Odor in your house there are some things you can do to get rid of it. Here’s how to get rid of stubborn pet odor for a better smelling house.

How to Get Rid of Pet Odor

Make Sure Accidents are Properly Cleaned

Don’t just soak up potty accidents with a paper towel, especially if it’s on the carpet. Accidents need to be properly cleaned so that pet odor will not linger. Soak up the accident, then use carpet cleaner to get rid of the smell and clean the carpet. Soaking up the accident then letting it dry will result in a stinky carpet that people will be able to smell.

Vacuum

Vacuum your carpet thoroughly. Vacuuming will pick up pet hair and dander that might be the root cause of the pet odor in your house. Don’t forget about any upholstery or furniture that might be covered in hair. Try to make your house as hairless as possible. Although we know that can be a difficult feat. This will prevent any odors from building up over time.

Use Baking Soda

Baking soda absorbs odor. Sprinkle Baking Soda on your carpets or furniture to absorb pet odor. Let the baking soda sit for a couple of hours to really make sure that any unpleasant smells are being taken care of. Then just vacuum up the baking soda really well. Your vacuum will pick up the baking soda and the unpleasant smell that the baking soda absorbed. You’ll notice a difference in how your house smells. You can also purchase scented baking soda products that will add a pleasant smell in the place of the unpleasant one.

Get Some Fresh Air

A dark closed off space is a perfect spot for a pet odor to get worse. Open up windows to get some fresh air inside your house. This will circulate the air in your home and allow any pet odor to be less concentrated. Sunlight can also help dissipate smells. Hang up any smelly rugs on a clothesline to that the sun can help freshen them up.

Clean Walls

You might not think that your walls could be capable of holding odor, but they definitely are. Pet odor can soak right into the paint of your walls and cause your entire house to stink. Wash your walls thoroughly with a gentle cleanser or a vinegar solution. You may also want to consider giving your walls a fresh coat of paint after you’ve cleaned them. This will cover up any remaining smells and give your walls a nice facelift.

Summing Up

Although it might be difficult, you can get rid of pet odor for good. Coming home to an unpleasant smell is not something that is enjoyed. Try using one of these methods to make your house smell better and to get rid of stubborn pet odor that has been lingering for a while.
