Jug Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Native Landscape

This fall, Lauren’s Garden Service tackled one of it’s biggest projects yet; a 1.5 acre native wildlife habitat at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary.  This included a wildflower meadow, woodland area, and native residential display gardens. Our crew planted over 600 plugs, 850 perennials, shrubs, and trees, all native to this area.

After unloading the 600+ plants, they all had to be placed.

Most of the meadow used native seed mixes- which will be blooming in Summer of 2019!  The plants included are:

Broomsedge – Andropogon virginicus
Swamp milkweed – Asclepias incaranata
Butterflyweed – Asclepias tuberosa
Smooth aster – Aster laevis
New England Aster – Aster novae angliae
False indigo – Baptisia australis
Tickseed – Coreopsis tinctoria
Virginia Wildrye – Elymus virginicus
Joe Pye Weed – Eupatorium fistulosa
False Sunflower – Heliopsis helianthoides
Gayfeather – Liatris spicata
Great blue lobelia – Lobelia siphilitica
Cardinal flower – Lobelia cardinalis
Wild bergamot – Monarda fistulosa
‘Jacob Cline’ Bee balm – Monarda didyma
Bitter panic grass – Panicum amarum
Black-eyed Susan – Rudbeckia hirta
Little blue stem – Schizachyrium scoparium
Early goldenrod – Solidago juncea
Blue vervain – Verbena hastata
Ironweed – Vernonia noveboracensis
Crimson clover
Annual rye
Spring Oats

The woodland area was planted with:

Common persimmon – Diospyros virginiana
Fringetree – Chionanthus virginicus
Eastern cedar- Juniperus virginiana
Black gum – Nyssia sylvatica
White pine – Pinus virginiana
Chestnut oak – Quercus prinus
Black oak – Quercus vetulina
Black locust – Robinia pseudoacacia

and the residential display gardens were planted with:

Threadleaf blue star – Amsonia hubrechtii
Swamp milkweed – Asclepias incaranata
Butterflyweed – Asclepias tuberosa
Smooth aster – Aster laevis
False indigo – Baptisia australis
Tickseed – Coreopsis tripteris
‘Magnus’ coneflower – Echinacea purpurea
