Planting Tomatoes

Planting Tomatoes:

Traditionally, greenhouse tomatoes were always grown in the greenhouse border. More recently, growing bags and other types of containers have been in favour. Other methods are used commercially, but three practical and easy methods are suitable for gardeners with small greenhouses, beds, growing bags and ring culture. All three systems have merits and drawbacks, but how well you look after your growing tomatoes can be as important as the system itself.

If planting directly into greenhouse beds, it is advisable to replace the soil at least every year. Growing bags are the easiest method of growing tomatoes in a greenhouse. Directions are usually given on the bag but it is simplicity itself, with the tomatoes planted through holes made in the bag.

Ring culture is worth considering once the border ceases to be productive. Make a trench in the border and line it with plastic to reduce the risk of contamination from the underlying soil. Place fine grit of gravel in the lined trench and place special ring culture bottomless pots on top. Fill the pots with with loam based soil mix and plant the tomatoes.

Water only into the rings, but once the plants are established and some roots have penetrated the aggregate below, feed through the pot but water through the aggregate.
