Netflix Confirms It’s Launching Mobile-Only Plans

It was reported earlier this year that Netflix was testing a mobile-only plan in some countries. The plan would be cheaper, costing only $4, the only limitation being that subscribers could stream Netflix on their mobile devices only. Since it was a test, the option was available to select users in just a few countries. Netflix has now confirmed that it’s going to properly launch mobile-only plans.

Netflix confirmed that India will be one of the first markets where it launches a mobile-only plan. The cheaper option will be lighter on the pocket as long as subscribers don’t mind being confined to their mobile device for streaming.

The company confirmed this in a letter to investors this afternoon. It says that the mobile-only plan “will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU (average revenue per user) is low (below $5).”

What’s not known at this point in time is what Netflix considers to be a mobile device. Someone with an iPad Pro probably won’t mind having a mobile-only subscription since the screen is a good enough size to enjoy content. Will this Netflix subscription be strictly limited to smartphones? We’ll get to know when this plan launches in India later this year.
