iPhone 7 Touch Screen Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It

One of issues that some Iphone 7 owners may come across is that the touch screen may become unresponsive, which prevents any interaction with the device. There can be various reasons for this problem. It could either be a software problem, which can be easily fixed with a number of troubleshooting procedures, or a hardware problem that will require a repair. If you own an iPhone 7 and its touch screen isn’t working anymore, then you’ve come to the right place.

Here are some ways of fixing an iPhone 7 with an unresponsive touch screen.

How to Fix iPhone 7 Touch Screen Not Working

Before reading the next section, take note of the following points:

  • When interacting with your iPhone, ensure that your fingers are clean and dry, as well as the screen, because liquid won’t let the touch screen to function properly.
  • It might be possible that the screen protector is interfering with the screen and preventing it from detecting touches. Remove the screen protector and see if the touch screen starts working again.
  • If the touch screen becomes unresponsive in some apps, then the issue is with the app itself and not the system software or hardware. Consider removing the app and re-installing.
  • Do you use your iPhone while wearing a glove? If yes, you should always remove it before using your iPhone.

If you’re still facing issues after taking note of the above points, then read the following solutions.

1. Hard Reboot

Minor software issues can be fixed by rebooting your iPhone. In this case, hard rebooting your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus may solve the problem. Here’s how:

Step 1: Press and hold the Power button on the right side of your iPhone.

Step 2: While continuing to hold down the Power button, press and hold the Volume down button on the left side of your iPhone.

Step 3: Keep holding both the buttons until your iPhone restarts and the Apple logo screen appears. At this point, the hard reset should be complete. Wait until the Lock screen is displayed, after which you can proceed with using your iPhone as normal.

2. Clear Documents and Data

If your iPhone’s touch screen becomes unresponsive every once in a while, it might be because of junk files and unwanted items that are taking space on your iPhone, especially if you haven’t cleaned up your phone for a long time. Consider removing the apps that you rarely use, as well as cached items and old media files.

Here’s how to remove an app along with all its documents and data:

  • Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage.
  • Tap on Manage Storage.
  • Find an unwanted app that is taking a lot of space and tap on it to open.
  • Tap on the Delete App button.

You may also want to clear the cache for Safari, Twitter, Telegram, and other apps. To clear Safari’s cache, go to Settings > Safari and tap on Clear History and Website Data.

3. Unplug Your iPhone

If your iPhone is plugged in to the charger, connected to a computer, or to any other external device, then you should unplug it and see if it solves the issue. Usually a faulty external device can cause your iPhone to become unresponsive.

4. Reset All Settings

Maybe an incorrect setting is causing your iPhone to become unresponsive every once in a while. You can reset the settings to factory defaults to make sure that the they are back to the correct configuration. Resetting the settings doesn’t remove any files or data from your iPhone.

  • Go to Settings > General.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset.
  • Press Reset All Settings and confirm to proceed.

5. Restore Your iPhone in DFU mode

If none of the above methods work, then you should put your iPhone into DFU mode and perform a restore. DFU mode prevents your device from loading the boot loader and the operating system, thereby allowing your iPhone to communicate with iTunes and restore from any state. In your case, your iPhone is unresponsive and this method will allow it to connect to iTunes to perform a restore.

To put your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into DFU mode, perform the following steps:

Step 1: Connect your device to your computer using a Lightning cable.

Step 2: Switch off your iPhone by holding the Power button and then sliding to power off.

Step 3: Open iTunes on your computer.

Step 4: Next, press and hold the Power button on the right side of your iPhone for 3 seconds.

Step 5: While still holding the Power button, press and hold the Volume down button on the left side of your iPhone. Keep holding both the buttons together for 10 seconds.

  • If you see the Apple logo, then you’ve held the buttons for too long and have to start over again.

Step 6: Release the Power button, but keep on holding the Volume down button for another 5 seconds.

  • If you see the “Plug into iTunes” screen on your iPhone, then you’ve held the button for too long and have to start over again.

Step 7: Your iPhone should be in DFU mode now. If you’ve performed the steps correctly, a popup message will appear on iTunes stating that “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”

Now that your iPhone 7 has entered DFU mode, proceed with restoring your iPhone via iTunes. You have to click on the ‘Restore iPhone…’ button and proceed with the on-screen instructions.

6. Take It to the Apple Store

If your iPhone’s touch screen is still unresponsive after performing a restore, then it might be cause of a hardware issue. Take it to a nearby Apple Store and have it inspected by the staff over there. If it’s a hardware problem, they will either repair it or replace it with a brand new iPhone of the same specifications.
