iOS 11's multitasking is the much-wanted shot-in-the-arm that iPad Pro needs to stake its claim to being an able replacement to the laptop. Using Split View and Slide Over in iOS 11, you can enormously ramp up your productivity.

So, while browsing the web, you can check out what your friends are up to on Instagram. That's not all, you can also prop up the third app into the mix to kill three birds with just one shot!

How to Use Split View and Slide Over in iOS 11 on iPad

Note: You will be able to take the full advantage of these multitasking features only on the latest models of iPad Pro.

Split View: It allows you to put two separate apps side by side. There is a movable divider between the two apps, which lets you choose between a 50:50, 75:25, 25:75 or 70:30 split.

Slide Over: With the use of Slide Over, you can put a second app on the left or right side of the panel. It will float over the other apps. You also get the option to hide it off the Screen and bring it back at any time you want.

App Space: Split View apps are conjoined in the App Switcher so that you can quickly get back to them. They are called App Spaces.

Slide Over Panel: It allows you to add the third app in the mix.

How to Add a Second App on Screen in Slide Over or Split View

Adding a second on screen in Split View or Slide Overview is pretty simple.

Add a Second App on Screen from Dock

Step #1. While one app is already opened, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access Dock.

Step #2. Next, you need to touch and hold an app drag it out of the Dock up to the screen.

Add a Second App on Screen from Home Screen

Step #1. Press the Home Button to go to your Home Screen. Then, tap and drag on an app on the Home Screen to invoke Multitasking mode. For example, let say, I want to open Maps and Safari.

Step #2. While dragging the Safari icon, I need to use my another finger to tap the Maps app.

Step #3. Now Safari will open within the Maps App.

Just in case if you want to open the app from another screen, use another finger to go to other screen and then tap on that app.

Add a Second App on Screen Using Spotlight

You can also use Spotlight Search to add a second app on the screen. With an app already open, you need to just swipe from the top of the screen to get the Notifications view → swipe right to get to the Today view → type the name of an app into the search box → When it appears then you have to drag the app icon from the search results and drop it over the current app.

Add a Second App to the Screen Using Bluetooth Keyboard

If you are using Bluetooth keyboard on your iPad, press Command+Space to invoke Spotlight, type the name of the app you wish to use and then drag it down to the main screen using one of the available methods.

If you want to invoke Split View, all you have to do is just drag the app to the far left or right of the screen until the main app pane shows up leaving a black space.

Then, you need to release your drag.

How to Turn a Split View Pane into a Slide Over Pane

Step #1. First off, invoke Split View. (drag the app to the far left or right of the screen until the main app pane shows up leaving a blank space.)

Step #2. Now, you have to pull down on the Split View pane's Edit handle at the top of the screen until main app pane takes over maximum screen space. Then, release your drag.

How to Resize and Reposition Apps in Split View

To resize the Split View apps, you need to drag on the vertical Edit handle in the middle of the screen.

To swap panes, you have to return the Split View pane to Slide-Over. To do so, just pull down on the top Edit handle, Then, move a Slide Over pane to the left side of the screen.

Turn it back into a Split View pane.

How to Swap/Change Apps in Split View

Simply touch and hold the new app from Dock or Home screen and then drag it on top of the app you want to switch out. The pane will slightly darken. Then, you need to release your drag. For an example I want to switch from Safari to Apple Music.

Step #1. First off, you need to tap and hold on the vertical Edit handle in the middle of the screen.

Step #2. Now, drag left or right to the edge of the screen to close the app.

• If you want to invoke Slide Over, simply drag the app to the center of the screen and then release it.
• Slide Over app will automatically position on the right side of the screen.

How to turn a Slide Over pane into a Split View pane

Step #1. Simply position the Slide Over window on the left or right side of the screen.

Step #2. Next, you have to pull down on the Slide Over pane's Edit handle at the top of the screen until the main app pane comes up, leaving a black space. Then, release the drag.

How to Reposition Slide Over App

If you want to reposition the app on the left side of the screen, simply tap and drag the top of the Slide Over window to the left side. To reposition the app on the right side of the screen, you have to tap and drag the top of the Slide Over window to the right side.

If you wish to hide the app, simply drag the top of the Slide Over window off-screen to the right. To view it again, swipe to left from the right from the edge of the iPad.

How to Swap out Apps in Slide Over

When you add a new app icon to the screen, the existing Slide Over pane automatically disappears. Just drag the new app from the Dock or Home screen on the screen.

How to Remove the Slide Over Pane

Simply swipe right on the active Slide Over app pane to send it off screen.

How to Show Three Apps on Screen At Once

If you wish to amp up multitasking even further, you can also add a third window to the two apps.

Normally, when you drop an app on either of the existing apps, it will replace the current one. Hence, you need to carry it out a bit carefully.

To add a third app as a Slide Over app, you need to drag it over the dividing bar between the Split View apps and drop it on that bar. In this example while Maps and Safari is opened, I am going to open Apple Music app.

Now, this third app will be added as a Slide Over panel.

How to Close Both Split View Panes at Once

If you want to close both Split View panes at once, all you have to do is just double press the Home button to access app switcher.

Now, swipe up on the Split View App Space to close it.
