MICRON'S REVIEW OF DRAM MARKET

Micron held its analysts’ day a week after the death of Chief Executive Steve Appleton, and as the chip industry reeled from excess Dram-chip supply that has led to falling prices.

But Micron’s new president, Mark Adams, said that the company sees a bottoming out in the DRAM market and “a potential balancing in supply and demand.”

DRAM memory chips are commonly used in personal computers, a market that has taken hits from weakening demand and the impact of the hard-disk drive shortage triggered by catastrophic floods in Thailand.

There’s been some debate on whether the situation is improving. On Thursday, Bernstein Research analyst Mark Newman argued that “PC DRAM is still in oversupply, which is only going to worsen in the coming month.”

Despite Micron’s more upbeat view, Adams echoed the sentiment of other analysts who see the DRAM market going through a period of change. “If you look at the fundamentals in the industry DRAM-wise,
you’ve got a pretty decent number of competitors who are in severe financial distress,” he said.

Samsung dominates the DRAM market, followed by Hynix, Micron and Elpida, according to IDC data. There’s speculation that Boise, Idaho-based Micron is regarding Ellpida as a possible acquisition target.

Micron has said it does not comment on speculation. Adams said the company always hopes “to find value in these market conditions.”

Micron is also a leading producer of NAND Flash processors used in a growing array of devices from smartphones and tablets to data-center equipment.

It’s a growing market where Micron hope to be a major player. However, Adams stressed the need for a well thought-out strategy in taking on what has become a fast-changing business.

“We want to make sure we’re able to address the shifts in demand and around customer performance,” he elaborated. “I say that because in the last 24 months, the industry has changed dramatically.”

He cited the rise of tablets and the continued growth of smartphones.
