A Phone for your Phone? Introducing the Credit Card-Sized Palm

With Apple and Samsung locking down the market, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd in the smartphone world. But we do like a trier. And having failed with their Pre in 2008, San Francisco’s Palm are back with their brand new tiny smartphone. Measuring in at 3.8 inches tall and 0.3 inches thick, it’s not looking to fully replace your current smartphone – rather just be an accessory to it…

A smartphone for your smartphone? That seems to be the general idea behind NBA’s Steph Curry-backed Palm. Approximately half the size of the iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy S9+, the Palm is paired with your current phone to be used on the weekends, when you’re out for the night or just generally want to be less distracted by a brick in your pocket.

But despite the ‘stripped-back’ marketing ploy, the Palm runs on Android 8.1 and has access to all the Google Play Store apps. It also comes with an 8-megapixel front camera and 12-megapixel counterpart on the rear, along with Bluetooth headphone support. Confused? We are too.

We’ve seen plenty of bare basic phone releases in the past with the likes of the Light Phone and the Zanco T1 having varying degrees of success. But at least these phone were consistent in their design; no apps, no distractions. The Palm, however, seems to be a tiny phone to keep you from using a big phone, but can do everything the big one can. It’s essentially a phone for your phone. Which is… odd.

The Palm smartphone is set for release in November in the States and is being launched for Verizon users who’ll have to pay $349 (around £265) on top of their usual phone for the extra device. It does look nice I suppose… Find out more over at the Palm Website.
