The secret to making this your Best Valentine’s Day

Your Best Valentines Day!

From the days when we gave paper Valentine’s to our schoolmates, to the years we longed for a special note from an admirer, and from the hype that the commercial world puts on February 14th and having someone special … there’s a lot of memories and expectations around Valentine’s Day.

We might even fantasize about our Best Valentines Day … the perfect gift, a thoughtful card, a wonderful romantic dinner … (as Elaine used to say in Seinfeld “yada, yada, yada” – here’s the video). We set the bar pretty dang high when it comes to February 14th.

The thing no one tells you is that’s it’s not the stuff that comes in a box, is written in a card, is served at a fancy restaurant or even the most amazing relationship that brings true Love.

Author Sonya Parker said: “Be your own best friend. LOVE YOURSELF. Fight for yourself. Take care of yourself. Make yourself happy. And chase after what you want.”

It’s up to you. Not Girlfriend gifts you get, dinners or drinks, romance or not.

The secret to loving others is to genuinely love yourself. Or as this quote says: “Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.”

How can you practice self-love – for your Best Valentines Day and an amazing life in your future? Here are simple ways to make this your Best Valentines Day:

  • Forgive yourself. We’ve ALL made mistakes. We’ve neglected our friends. We’ve said things we shouldn’t have, gossiped, been selfish, made LOTS of mistakes. What would happen if you just forgave yourself? Forget your mistakes. Or apologize to whomever you need to say ‘I’m sorry’ to, then forget about it.
  • Love yourself – Whatever the scale, wrinkles, flaws, or the dreams that you haven’t reached yet. Be your own best friend. She would love you regardless – right? (And hopefully, you have one or more BFFs to model that true love around.) Treat yourself as you treat your friends – with unconditional love.
  • Don’t take yourself seriously. I have a wonderful friend, Judi, who is a fab, funny friend. She is silly, smart, sassy and a great girlfriend. If I need to lighten up, I spend time with her or another fun friend. They help me to remember that life is meant to be fun and that we can’t take on the cares of the world.
  • Remember, you’re not alone. Think of the women in your world who care about you. The amazing, smart, strong females who challenge you, inspire you, and support you. You’re definitely not alone. Even when they’re time and distance, true friends will still be there for you.
  • It’s up to you. Like this quote, YOU deserve your love and affection, as much as anyone in the universe. Give yourself the gift of acceptance and self-love. Celebrate the woman who has been through tough situations, who has faced challenges that, at the time, seemed overwhelming – but you’re still here. And, you probably don’t even know it, but you’re a hero to your friends and family.
  • If you doubt anything about how loveable you are, phone a friend. That’s the beauty of BFFs, sometimes they see things in us that we don’t necessarily see ourselves. Call, email or text a girlfriend and ask her to share what she sees in you. Or do that for her, then ask her to reciprocate. Friends can see things in us that we don’t always see ourselves.

Bottom line, it’s up to YOU to make this your BEST Valentines Day. And, you can do it.
