Paddington Bear Literature Study – Review

One of the things I will be incorporating a lot of this year with both kids is literature studies. I was really excited to review Paddington Bear by Branch Out World. I really like the variety of picture book studies they have. This particular Study is geared for ages 5- 9.

How this literature study works is you read the book Paddington once a day for 5 days and it is followed up with different activities. The study itself is 5 days long. This particular study took us to London, England and a look at Peru. Paddington was originally from Peru. I forgot that he was a stowaway on a ship and ended up in London and ended up meeting the Browns. You can personalize the learning for each child and that is one thing I like about this. It has suggestions for older and younger children so you get the most of the study. You will find over 30 activities with instructions, over 45 pages of printables: including a timeline, mini book, maps, flags, notebooking page, there is a list of supplies that you will need, there are also book and film suggestions as well.

How We Used This:

I used this with my daughter as she still loves reading picture books. Don’t get me wrong she also loves her chapter books as well. I was really excited to dive into this with my daughter. It took us longer then 5 days as I have incorporated more learning into based off of what I was give. I will explain that a little more as I go on. Each day that we started the new activities we read the book Paddington Bear. So there was days we didn’t as we were still on a previous day.

For Day 1 you explore the setting of the story. We did some map and flag work. We learned about what London was famous for as well as Peru. We didn’t make the poster as I have been short on ink. We will be going back to this soon and she will be either drawing the land marks or building them in Minecraft. We learned facts about both countries as well. We looked into the culture more about everyday life and compared it to what it was back in the 50s to what is in now. We also looked closely at the different events that were posted in that study. We studied each of them a little further. We did some reading as well as watched some videos.

For Day 2 you explore the words of the story. You learn about the author. We had a discussion about Helping others and how the characters helped each other in the book and how we help each other at home. I had my daughter explain to me what the story was about in her own words. There is some grammar and vocabulary in this section. The fun part was having the child pick a stuffed animal that could inspire a story to be written. My daughter spent a good day writing her story that included her favorite Unicorn. What adventure she had it go on! This had really inspired her and she has continued to write stories since.

For Day 3 is exploring the pictures. I think this was my favorite study to do with my daughter. We learned about the artist who did the pictures in the book. There is a game that goes along with the pictures that was really fun for us. I extended it a little and her add twists to the stories in her drawings. We learned about different Architectural features. We spent some time searching the internet so we could get some good visuals on what each one was. We talked about Principles of Design and there was a hands on activity with this. We also talked about Design and Emphasis. We did some further searching on these topics as well. We did some of our own activities for this as well.

For Day 4 the topic is exploring science. I think this was my daughters favorite as there was hands on activities. I think her favorite was the shaving foam science. We also had fun with the sensory activities as well. Another favorite was the Nature Study of the Garden. We don’t have a garden so we took our nature study to the beach. We spotted different birds and insects. We saw butterflies and humming bird moths. You could still smell the wildflowers and milkweed. The smell reminds us of lilacs.

For Day 5 – We are still finishing this one up. The topics in this are exploring math, crafts and more. We have worked on parallel lines and talked about train tracks. For the fun of it we brought out the train tracks and made different shapes and lines to see if our trains would go or not. That is as far as we got. There are some fun activities in this lesson as well. The crafts look fun and the recipes look tasty!

I must say I was really impressed with this. This will make a great memory keep sake as well. I loved all the learning that went into each day. I love being able to incorporate other things into this study as well for her to get the most out of it. We will be using future studies from Branch Out World!

One more thing we just started doing at night now that we are close to finishing is watching the cartoon Paddington Bear series. We are loving it!
