Q The Robot Review

Tags: robot review

Are your children showing an interest in electronics or robots? If so EEME has kits for both electronics and robotics. We recently had the change to Review Q the Robot. The electronic kits are monthly kits for ages 7 – 12. Q the Robot is a one time purchase for kids ages 10 and up. What makes these kits a little more interesting is that it comes with online instruction, and your not reading things off a paper trying to figure it all out.

We received Q the Robot and we spent probably three days working on it. I split up the time, but you could do this in one day and it would take a couple hours. Everything you will need to build Q the Robot is sent in the box that arrives. Once you open it you will see a piece of paper that tells you how to log in. I also received an email and saved that email as it took me to the place I could find the directions. You don’t need prior experience to build Q the Robot either! Also in the videos you are taught to be safe so you don’t short circuit anything. There is no soldering involved either.

Let me tell you a little bit about Q the Robot. Q is a light powered robot that works on three wheels. You can purchase extra materials to enhance the sensors and modules. I am not exactly sure what the extra materials due, but they do sound pretty cool. As your building Q the Robot you are learning about autonomous circuitry. You learn how exactly it flows through each piece.

Here are the different things you will learn:

  • photoresistors
  • resistors
  • LED
  • motor and gear reduction
  • transistors
  • electric current and voltage
  • and much more

Once your ready to build you log in and your start watching the videos. The videos are not just teaching you how to build it, you are actually learning what each piece does. Your learning the facts about how things work. The videos do a great job in explaining that. Each video is not very long in length so your not over whelmed with LONG videos. You can start and stop at any time or you can work through them.

How We Used This:

I used this with my son and I had added it into his science class. We spent about 45 minutes a day for roughly three days. Only I want to say the third day was much longer for us. The reason being was we wanted to keep going and finish Q because we just couldn’t stop. It was that engaging. I know there were times my son drifted away when their was explanations on what the pieces did or what was happening. It wasn’t because it wasn’t engaging enough, my son takes longer to process things and some of the things we did towards the end we did in longer time chunks.

In the beginning we got excited about the LED light. We had a little trouble with the connection in the beginning. My son was a little nervous about shorting out the battery pack so he had me take care of the wiring and batteries for that. I give him credit for being aware and saying that he can’t. It made me feel a part of this project too!

Once the building really started where you start adding the wheels and the motors, you just can’t stop! You want to see what comes next. I think that was the most exciting time for my son was that process where he was about to make something and try it out to see if it worked. The problem solving that went into it. My son actually missed one stop, so it took us a little bit to trouble shoot as we had to watch the videos of plugging in the switch and batteries, and the motors again. Ok maybe a couple times….but we did figure it out!

My only complaint and it really isn’t a complaint….is that I wish I had a bigger piece of velcro like in the video, rather then a small dot. I felt the piece was not as sturdy as they could have been. So I think I am going to go and get some velcro next time I am at Hobby Lobby to replace the little circle. Don’t let that part discourage you because the pieces held together just fine. That is just my preference.

One thing I really liked about this is the fact that you have video instruction show you how to do things step by step. It is harder sometimes to look at a paper and put things together. Being able to visually see what is done my son could follow it correctly and know where his mistakes were, by going to back to rewatch the video.

Over all I think this was a very interesting kit. I would highly recommend it if your child did in fact like robotics. It is very is very engaging and information. They end up building such a neat robot. I never would have even though about a light powered robot. It is pretty cool.
