Home School in the Woods Review – Hands on Projects!!

Tags: kid review folder

My kids style of learning is hands on. I am always looking for creative ways that I can supplement our learning.  Home School in the Woods now offers many of their hands on history projects Á La Carte. You will find many different file Folder games, newspapers, timelines and many other projects. We recently had the chance to Review The Art of Quilling and Westward, Ho! File Folder Game.

Westward, Ho! File Folder Game was a fun way to learn and review about heading out to the Wild West. You have a choice of choose one of six trails to take out west. Before you head out on the trail you want to make sure to collect all of your supplies. You have a dice that you roll for supplies and you take turns. If you already have the supply that you don’t get to collect anything. You must wait for your next turn. Once all supplies are collected you start heading out west on the game board. Now you may roll a dice but that doesn’t mean that you get to move. You have to answer one of the questions correctly before you can move. If you land on a Native Guide you put that on your marker. That Native Guide will protect you from having to go backwards. Once you use it then you have to remove the guide. There are spots on the board that you move forward, backward, and roll again. This particular file folder game is for grades 3 – 8.

How We Used It:

It took me a while to put this game together as I laminated many of the cards. I didn’t realize just how many question cards their was until they were cut out and ready to make a pile. To me that was a good thing as you will find you don’t repeat questions as often. I had taken this to a friends house to play with the kids. We have learned about the Wild West but there was still a lot to learn about the 19th Century. The question cards cover the 19th Century so you have a wide variety of questions to answer. We started out a little differently as we weren’t sure just how many of the questions the kids would get right or wrong. We thought it might make a long game if they got a lot of it wrong. So we had a little fun with the questions before we started so the kids could get a chance to preview them before they played. The kids did have fun and asked to play it a couple more times.

The Art of Quilling is a hands on art project for kids in grades 3 – 8. You start out learning about some brief history of the Art of Quilling. I had no idea that this form of art was done in the Renaissance Era. Quilling uses the 3-dimensianal art of rolled paper. I had no idea that nuns and monks took up this hobby to make decorations. You have a pattern that you will use to complete the project. There is some explanation on some of the different techniques you will be using. I shouldn’t say techniques, maybe the different shapes that you will use.

How We Used This:

I actually took this to my friends house as a project to do with the kids. I had ordered a beginners quilling kit from Amazon that came with everything we need to do this project and a few extras. At first my daughter just wanted nothing to do with this project. The other kids got tired after an hour and a half, as we only had one tool to use among three kids. As you can imagine sharing a tool with something like this takes a lot longer and I don’t blame the kids for getting tired. It would have been faster if they each had tools of their own.  I had asked my daughter to finish her project though. She was happy to finish it. She really enjoyed learning how to paper quill. She asked me if next time she could just be creative and do what she wanted to. I was like absolutely! I even mentioned to her we could find some different patterns or ideas to try later. This isn’t really hard to do it’s a matter of time that it takes. My daughter didn’t make use the colors in the picture. My daughter had to be colorful and use many different colors. That’s the beauty of having fun and making our projects look different.

I had really enjoyed the projects that I had the chance to review. I do have my eyes on a couple other projects that we would like to do. I would like to try The Penny Rug Notebook with my daughter. It’s a thrift craft from the 19th century. It looks to be 2 dimensional. I would also like to get Name That State! File Folder Game. I want my daughter to learn the state capitals and the initials for the states. What better way to learn them by playing a game.
