Navigating the Rapids of Parenting – DVD Review

Do you ever wonder if you are Parenting your children the right way? I know there are days I question whether I am doing it right. I want to make sure that my kids grow up to be obedient, respectful, and responsible. I had the chance to review a DVD from Parenting Made Practical, the DVD was called Navigating the Rapids of Parenting. After watching this DVD I cannot wait to read the book Taming the Lecture Bug … and Getting Your Kids to Think.

Navigating The Rapids of Parenting is a Christian based parenting DVD. Joey and Carla Link are the parent educators and have been serving families for over 25 years. Joey has a history of working with youth and well as being a pastor and his wife Carla was a social worker. Together they both have a unique way to teach parents how to navigate through the different phases of parenting children. There are 4 phases to a child’s life and each stage has different transitions. In Session 1: Birth – Middle School you learn the first two phases. In Session 2: Middle School – College you learn the last two phases. Each session is roughly 45 minutes.

Parenting for me has been a challenge. I think I struggle with my middle child more then I do my first and third child. Maybe it is because he has more needs then the other two, but there are times I feel like I am getting it all wrong and am going to be in trouble. After watching the DVD I realized that there things I can go back to in the different phases and work on where he is lacking, where I am lacking in how I do things with him. I need to teach him to think for himself more.

There were three different things they talked about in the Middle School years that stood out to me. It was the why questions that you start to get from your children. The comprehension questions that you ask your children, and I can’t remember the third thing off hand. Many examples were given during the DVD and one was about their son wanting to go to a Dance. He didn’t know how to dance so his mom had showed him different dances of fast and slow. There were questions asked about what would you do if the girl asked you to dance. He said that he wouldn’t go. Then it was what would you do if the girl and her friends came and asked you to dance. Again he said no. Then there were a few more scenarios give. The last one he didn’t have an answer for. So he was told that until he had an answer as to what he would do, he couldn’t go to the dance. It was allowing him to think about what he would do in different situations and what the consequences were. I thought that was pretty interesting that their son agreed. He heard all about the dance from his friends and he was glad he didn’t go. I enjoyed the real life stories about their kids and how they handled things.

A couple things I could change with my middle son is to do allow him to think for himself more. I don’t think I give him enough credit because of his disabilities. I really liked the asking questions about situations to make sure he understands them and how some situations may go. It’s more then just that. You want to show your child right and wrong, why they need to do things by showing them how, and giving them the motivation to do it. In motivation it means corrections to get it right. I don’t want to spoil all the phases and get to detailed because I really think this DVD is very encouraging for every parent to watch.

For me there was a lot to learn and some I am already doing. This just showed me better ways to do some of the things I am doing now. Like for example with my daughter, when I want her to do something – I call her to come and wait for her to come by me and make eye contact. Then I give her the task. It’s easier than just saying Britt can you do this…because when she is front of me she is acknowledging me and has full attention. The one thing we have to work on a little is doing things with out whining and with out complaining. It’s not terrible but it is work in progress.

I have to say that I did love the verses that were tossed out during the different phases. I wrote them down to go back to them as reminders.

When I was finished I went and picked up the book Taming the Lecture Bug .. and Getting Your Kids to Think…. I just paged through some of the chapters and noticed that a lot of things that were mentioned in the DVD were talked about in the book and they look to be in more detail. It repeats with ownership and responsibility, obedience, and even thinking for themselves.  I can’t wait to find a quiet moment to start reading this.
