Have you ever heard of the shows Drive Thru History? If you haven’t I highly recommend checking it out, as it is a great addition to use in your homeschool. Drive Thru History Adventures is more then just videos, as I go through this review you will see just how amazing it is. For this review we received Drive Thru History Adventures online year subscription. This curriculum is geared for ages 12 and up, but younger kids can enjoy the episodes as well.
Let me explain a little more about the online subscription to Drive Thru History Adventures. You can find episodes in three different categories: American History, Ancient History, and Bible History. They are full length episodes but it goes a step further. There is curriculum that can be used with each of the episodes. There is also Adventures TV, and that brings you a lot of different extras: bloopers, behind the scenes, road trips, shows, specials, mini docs, and weekly updates. The nice thing is that there is a special facebook group created to be used with your subscription. You can ask questions and get updates on the newest things. You also can interact with other people.
If your not familiar with Drive Thru History, Dave Stotts really brings history to life in each of his episodes. In each episode you learn about people, events, and places during the historical events. What makes it worth watching is there are some places I can’t travel to at this time, so I at least get to see the places through the episodes.
How We Used This:
I used Drive Thru American History Adventures with my son. We did a lesson a week and we really added to what we were learning about. We would watch the episode and we would use the extra resources. We did further reading and we used the questions as well. My son answered them orally instead of writing. I love the fact that my son was interested and engaged in each episode. We would pause the videos and talk further about the different events. I would answer any questions that my son had. There were times we did a little extra research into some of the things we had learned. One of my favorite pieces was the poem The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. We read through that poem and we went a step further and looked at the different literature aspects to it. Brought back memories of high school for me.
The nice thing is that everything you need to go along with the videos is found where the episodes are. If you want to look ahead you can look in the resource section to plan further. The other extras fall under Adventures TV. There is a section called Side Roads, in that section you can find other things to learn about. For example, there was an episode about the history of cheese. Who knew that cheese was made by accident and ended up tasting really good! You actually have to watch it because it is pretty funny! Don’t want to tell you anymore or it would spoil it.
For us using this has been a nice break from the traditional book work. We will continue to watch the episodes and continue learning. I am hoping that it sparks more interest for my son and we will have even more to research and study as we go along.
