India’s First Trick Art Museum Is In Chennai and We Love It!

If you have been a recent trip to the VGP Snow Kingdom on ECR, then you would have surely stepped into the Click Art Museum that opened last summer. Once you step in you will love the idea of taking an apple from Adam’s painting or get kicked by none other than Bruce Lee or be the ‘Mankind’s Angel’ inspired by Tahir Shah or have tea with Mona Lisa.

Trick art also known as ‘Optical Art’ or ‘3D Art’ is said to have a long history of over 2,000 years. The interactive art has two-dimensional images that paint an illusion of a third dimension. The technical name for this type of art is ‘Tompe-l’oeil’, which in French means ‘deceive the eye’. This form of art is said to have started in Greek and Roman times to make an illusion that a room was larger than it actually was. This art form was used in a number of western paintings for many years and is especially noted for the ceiling paintings.  The artists were so adept that they could make a flat ceiling seem vaulted.

The brain behind this quirky museum is artist AP Shreethar. He has created the 3D art frames in such a way that every piece is complete only when the viewer enters the frame. There are 24 interactive works at this one-of-a-kind museum in India with only 42 other such museums across 12 countries. The huge life-like idyllic images trick the eyes and recreate scenes into works such as Adam giving an apple, Monalisa with a coffee, Bruce Lee’s kick, a fire breathing dragon, a selfie clicking Chimpanzee and much more.

Shreethar is said to have got the idea after visiting trick art museums in other countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Phuket and Hong Kong. He created a bank of 70 such art works before launching this museum.

The Chennai museum’s trip starts with a brief tour and interpretation from the staff members. Visitors are provided with a brief overview of the museum, the trick art paintings and also given a quick tutorial on how to position yourself for the maximum effect of the illusions. Tutorial videos are also played at major spots inside the museum and standees with instruction are placed to prepare the visitors.

Ever since its launch, the museum has received huge footfalls, especially during weekends and the artist is thrilled about it. So over the last year two more similar museums have come up in the city – one is located at Mayajaal multiplex on ECR again and another one is at the popular city mall, Express Avenue. Both these places are also get a lot of enthusiasts.

Next time you are looking out to spend a fun day with family, just head to one of these click art museums in town!
