PERTH | The Belgian Beer Cafe has been a fixture on Perth’s pub scene since the early 2000s and has been a favourite haunt of ours since then. Walk inside and things are pretty much the same as they’ve ever been. A space that’s designed to resemble a 1930s Belgian beer cafe. It’s a classic look with lots of wood panelling, seating and benches, vintage posters and the like, and it works. There’s alfresco seating out the front on Murray Street and a small beer garden out the back.
As the name suggests, the primary focus here is on Belgian beers. Five beers you’ll always find here are Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brune, Bellevue Kriek. On top of this you’ll find a rotating selection of other Belgian beers as well as a number of local craft beers. Don’t be surprised to see beers from breweries like Gueuzerie Tilquin, Feral, and Mash alongside the more traditional breweries. If there’s nothing on the taps that tickles your fancy, Belgian Beer Cafe also offers around 50 different bottles at any given time. Beers are served in their proper glasses, rinsed and poured properly before being served. There’s also wine and spirits for those not into beer.
Food is share plates and a selection of classic and modern pub meals like loaded fries, burgers, parmas and moules marinere. The food can be a bit hit and miss here – when it’s good it’s good but it doesn’t always hit the mark. We tend to come here for beers as the primary focus, and grab some of the tasty Belgian frites to nibble on.
Overall the Belgian Beer Cafe does what it’s always done well – provide an interesting assortment of Belgian beers on tap and in bottles in a unique, atmospheric space. With the addition of local craft beer taps, it’s managed to make itself appealing to non-Belgian beer lovers too.
