Is it a sandwich? Or a meat-and-cheese-filled donut?

Normally, we are not fans of chain restaurants. But in order to keep from taking a derogatory slant, suffice it to say that for the most part, they usually leave us disappointed. However there’s one in particular that is definitely on our list of favs.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen (our version is located in Chattanooga, TN) is always a go-to when we want to enjoy a more relaxed and casual dining experience. Though they offer healthy and not-so-healthy menu choices at reasonable prices, there’s one menu item in particular that is guaranteed to change your life. And that item is (drum roll please…..)

….the Monte Cristo Sandwich.

The menu description of this mouth-watering delectable does not do it justice. It must be seen to be understood. And then tasted to be believed. We’re not even sure it can be technically called a sandwich. Because you see, folks, Monte Cristo a là Cheddar’s is basically a meat-and-cheese-filled donut. And while that may be off-putting to the ears, it is certainly music to the mouth. A combination of smoked ham, smoked turkey and two cheeses, this protein-and-dairy symphony is then battered, deep-fried and dusted in powdered sugar. But it doesn’t stop there. You then get the added bonus of a raspberry dipping sauce that just sends the whole thing over the top. It’s one of those very rare occasions where you can enjoy your entrée and feel like you’re having dessert at the same time. #bonus

At a whopping 1250 calories, the consumption of this sandwich will definitely require a little bit of extra effort the next time you go to the gym. To help balance it out, you could choose steamed broccoli as your side option. But why? Go big or go home. Broccoli, nor anything else green, has a right to be on the plate next to this bad boy. If you make the choice to achieve some kind of balance here, you’ll still end up feeling guilty. And setting oneself up in such a way only serves to stomp on the buzz that is this sandwich.
