At first sight, all Maldivian Food might look similar because it’s mostly seafood, but every dish has its own unique flavour and ingredient.

Origin

Highly influenced by the Kerala cuisine in India and the Sri Lankan cuisine, the Maldivian food is spicy, authentic and uses a lot of colourful spices too. The main ingredients in the dishes are coconut, fish and rice and the others include chillies, curry leaves and aromatic spices.

The Best

The must-try dishes when visiting the Maldives are Banbukeylu harissa, Bis keemiya, Hedhika, Garudiya, Mashuni, Thelui mas and Kavaabu. These dishes are made with fish, lemon juice, coconut milk and chilli.

Everyday food

Another staple food there is Roshi, a type of flatbread made with pieces of coconut flakes in between. Dried fish pickle is a side that goes well with flatbread or any type of bread for that matter and is loved by the locals.

Dining

A typical five star hotel in Maldives the likes of Grand Park Kodhipparu provide private beach spots for a memorable evening under the stars. Also, remember that the Maldives is an Islamic country, and so, you won’t find alcohol in places other than the tourist spots and resorts.
