I just came back from a short trip to my country Mexico and I can’t wait to share with you some of the gorgeous places and the food treasures that I found there. This trip also inspired me to write new Mexican recipes that I’ll be sharing with you in the next posts to come

The wedding, the beach, the food…

During my holidays I assisted to a beautiful wedding at Punta de Mita. It’s one of the most popular beach destinations in Mexico right now. If you haven’t heard about this place I can tell you it’s absolutely amazing.

Punta de Mita is a beachfront village located on the north end of Banderas Bay in the Mexican state of Nayarit. It’s very close to Puerto Vallarta and the surf village of Sayulita.

This area is surrounded by incredible beach views, pretty towns and plenty of delicious local food stands and restaurants. There are options for all kind of budgets and palates and it’s not a surprise that it’s been consider an authentic food paradise not just for locals but also for international visitors.

I was also in Guadalajara  – my hometown where the Cerveza Corona and the Torta Ahogada are made -. Additionally, I went to the city of Guanajuato to visit my Dad and some other pretty towns near Guadalajara such as Chapala, Ajijic and to the iconic town of Tequila, Jalisco where our famous spirit is made.

My Top 5 Mexican food specialties

After a careful deliberation I have selected my Top 5 Mexican food dishes from this fantastic trip and here there is the list. I hope you like it and that you can stop by to any of these places if you get the chance to visit Mexico soon.

1. Mexican street seafood. Bucerias Beach

There is not a specific place to eat seafood at Bucerias (small beach resort town located in the state of Nayarit). Wherever you stop by it’s pretty amazing, very fresh and with a unique local taste that doesn’t exist in any other region.

We went to one of the multiple seafood street stands called ‘Marisco el Payo’ and we ordered Ceviche and a Coctel de Mariscos (Mexican seafood cocktail). It was so damn delicious.

The homemade Habanero salsa was out of this world!

2. Tacos de lengua at ‘Tacos Don Luis’. Guadalajara, Mexico.

Everyone who lives in Guadalajara knows about Tacos Don Luis, which is a taco stand located in the famous suburb of Mexicaltzingo. It’s one of the oldest taquerias in Guadalajara where you can eat the best ‘taco de lengua’ (beef tongue taco) in town.

I’ve got to this place since the age of five and I still visiting until now. These tacos are very yummy since then.

If you are looking for an extreme food experience you must try here the ‘taco de ojo’ (eye taco) and the ‘taco de sesos’ (brain tacos). They are such a delish!

3. Tacos al pastor at ‘Tacos Ivan’. Sayulita Beach

This place is fantastic. They made the most delicious Tacos al pastor I’ve ever tried.

You’ll recognize this taco stand for the huge ‘Trompo of pastor meat’ (vertical meat rotisserie) and the ‘Taquero’, who is a real pro slicing the meat and the pineapple before serving it on small corn tortillas. Speechless!

4. Torta ahogada ‘El Coneja’. Guadalajara, Mexico.-

If you visit the Mexican city of Guadalajara you must eat a Torta Ahogada (drowned sandwich), which is a native dish.

Hidden within one of the oldest suburbs in Guadalajara (San Miguel de Mezquitan) Tortas Ahogadas ‘El Coneja’ (The Rabbit) is a gem. They’ve been selling Tortas Ahogadas since 1982 and they know their business very well.

The Rancheras songs (Traditional Mexican music) playing here at all the times will make you feel very welcome. It’s a lovely local and traditional place with lots of history that worth’s the visit.

5. Dona Rosa Mexican Antojitos. Guadalajara, Mexico.-

This is another hidden food treasure in Guadalajara city. Dona Rosa Cenaduria (Outdoor eatery opening during nights) is located in the north area of Guadalajara near the Jalisco Soccer Stadium.

It’s literally placed at the garage of Dona Rosa’s house which makes it even more authentic and unique.

Everything you order here is incredible yummy but I can highly recommend the quesadillas and the  flautas (crispy large tacos). In winter season Dona Rosa makes a beautiful hot drink made from corn called atole. You can’t miss it out.
