3 Compromises You Can’t Afford to Make in a Tiny House

Between the TV shows, magazines, and conventions, it is abundantly clear that Tiny houses are becoming big business. Even if you have no personal desire to live in one, you can’t help but be fascinated by the concept. And there is a chance that some part of you is wondering just a little…

One of the questions an outsider looking in might wonder is why a person would purchase a tiny house when for the same money, one could get a full-sized mobile home. This is not a question we are going to attempt to answer here. Because if you are already picking out furniture for your tiny house, you have already answered that question for yourself.

However, we do have to address the fact that a tiny house is all about compromise. It is the purest expression of the expression, “art of the possible”. It is less about wish fulfillment, and more about the relentless pursuit of practicality, maximizing what actually can be done.

Somewhere between desire and possibility is the land of compromise. There are compromises tiny house owners have to make such as space, overnight guests, and a normal flushing toilet. Then there are the things that cannot be compromised. Here are three:

A Good Night’s Sleep

You simply cannot function without a good night’s sleep. One of the compromises you have to make for a tiny house to work is bedroom furniture. You would be surprised at all the things you don’t need.

You don’t need a headboard or even a frame. If you are using a crawlspace loft, you don’t have room for those things anyway. What you do have room for is a good mattress. And if you don’t have room, make room. A good night’s sleep is one of those things you quite literally can’t live without.

There are plenty of things you can do to design your tiny house bedroom to feel cozy. It does not have to be completely spartan. In fact, there are very good reasons why you want to make sure it isn’t.

A Homey Look and Feel

No one wants to live in something that feels like a refrigerator box. It is easy for a tiny home to look and feel that way if you do not bring your A-game with regard to design and decoration. There are many ways to make your tiny home feel inviting. And it is crucial that you discover and implement them.

When you come home from a hard day’s work, you have to go to a place that feels like home. It has to look like home. It has to smell like home. The food has to taste like home. And if all those TV shows, websites, magazines, and conventions have taught us anything, it is that with a little creativity, you can make any space feel like home. You never want to sacrifice that feeling of home.

The Company of People You Love

Not everyone is the kind of person who likes to be around other people. There is nothing wrong with that. And a tiny house might be perfect for them. But many people thrive on the company of friends and family and guests who just happen to drop by for a visit.

Regardless of any other circumstance that led you to tiny home living, your social preference is not something you can easily change. The good news is that you can have a tiny home that is designed to accommodate guests for the day. There are clever ways to expand your entertaining to the outdoors.

You can prioritize the kitchen space with full-sized appliances so that cooking and entertaining is easier. The tiny homes that run 600 sq ft and higher are perfect for accommodating creative seating for more than four people.
You don’t have to give up having company. But you do have to make it a part of your tiny home design from the beginning. Adding social space is difficult to do after the fact.

So go ahead and practice the art of the possible at the expert level. But don’t compromise on a good night’s sleep, a homey look and feel, and the company of the people you love.
