Raising Financially Responsible Children

As a parent, I am being faced with the daunting task of Raising Financially Responsible kids in a "I want it now" world. Recently, I came to the realization of just how much work I have to do. Earlier this month, I tried to institute an allowance program for my 12 year old. I thought that twenty dollars a week was reasonable for her age. I also thought that given the numerous conversations that I have had with her in the past about tithing and saving a portion of her money, she would take that into consideration. However, when the opportunity arose, my child decided to spend her entire allowance on one meal. Paid on Friday, broke on Saturday. Of course, she didn't care about being frivolous with her money because she feels that the "bank of mom" is always open. It is amazing how many adults today, have that same attitude about money. Buy whatever I want now, think about consequences later.

I do not want to raise my children to have purely a consumer mentality. Even high income individuals will never achieve financial independence if their desire to consume is not controlled.
