Twitter Names Okonjo-Iweala as Board of director member

Twitter Names Okonjo-Iweala as Board of director member – Twitter has appointed former Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former World Bank chief Robert Zoellick as directors in a reshuffle of its Board.

It says that Dame Marjorie Scardino, former Pearson chief executive, would step down at the end of the year.

Ms Scardino, who became Twitter’s first female board member when she joined in 2013 and was named lead independent director in 2016, is stepping down for personal reasons, Twitter said on Thursday.

Omid Kordestani, executive chairman, lauded her “strong voice” and said her “insights and contributions have been invaluable.”

Kordestani said Ms Okonjo-Iweala and Zoellick were “distinguished leaders with unparalleled global perspective and policy expertise” who would “be incredible assets to Twitter as we continue to focus on driving transparency and making Twitter a safer, healthier place for everyone who uses our service.”

Ms Okonjo-Iweala, a frequent Twitter user with more than 860,000 followers, is a senior adviser to Lazard and a former managing director of the World Bank who twice led Nigeria’s finance ministry. She also serves on the board of directors of Standard Chartered.

Zoellick, who joined Twitter in February and has not tweeted, has been board chair at AllianceBernstein since last year. He was World Bank president from 2007 to 2012, worked at Goldman Sachs, and served in the Reagan administration and under both Bush presidencies.

They join the board at a time when Twitter, like Facebook, is under pressure to fight harmful content on its service, from terrorist propaganda and harassment to bullying and disinformation.

In a tweet confirming the appointment, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her excitement to work with the Twitter board:
