7 of the Greatest Technological Inventions

One must admit that we humans are an ingenious species. That became evident from the moment someone bashed a rock on the ground to make the first sharp-edged tool and wheel was invented.

We are living in an era where people from the past could never imagine. Many Technological Inventions have dramatically changed the way we live. Let’s talk about some of those greatest ones.

Personal Computer

For sure, no list of the “greatest technologies ever invented” would be complete if the personal computer was not included. The first general purpose computer was a 30-ton behemoth invented in 1947 and revolutionized the entire world. Six years later came Microchip technology, that significantly reduced the cost — and size — of the processor as its power increased and form factors became much more compact.

There are over a billion PC’s in existence today.  PC have had a dramatic impact on our society.  They have created a much faster more efficient workplace. From secretaries to scientist, everyone has a computer.

Cellular Phones

The idea for cellular phone service dates back at least to 1947. The first mobile phone call was made from a Motorola phone in 1973 by Martin Cooper. A Motorola researcher who rang up his rival at AT&T Bell Labs to test the new phone.  Forty four years later, there an estimated total of almost 2.6 billion smartphone users in the world, according to The Statistics Portal.

GPS

According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Global Positioning System was originally developed in 1978 by the U.S. military. Thanks to GPS and its integration, life is much easier now. Most of us will never get lost again.  We now can go places that we wouldn’t have ordinarily visited.

Internet

The Internet was invented in the late ’60s and made available to the public in the ’90s. Internet has arguably changed the world more than most other inventions. Since then, it has improved both communication and information. Its has changed life for virtually everyone.  Education, videoconferencing (even for surgery), etc.

Digital Cameras

Digital cameras made a huge impact on the photography world.  The days of taking a pictures and having them developed are gone.  Even more primitive were the cameras that took a picture and the photo slid out of the bottom of the camera.  Digital Cameras give you a clearer more realistic looking photo.  Digital video recording has also played a role in its success.

Satellite Communications

Satellite communications allow TV, radio, data and telephone transmissions to be sent anywhere in the world. Satellites are in orbit around the world, either moving or geo-stationary relative to the earth. They are powered by solar cells and batteries. They relay transmissions from one ground station to another via the network of satellites.

Robots and Artificial Intelligence

The term “robot” was coined by Czechoslovakian playwright Karel Capek in 1920 — “robota”. The first real industrial robot was built in 1954 by George Devol.  Five years later, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology founded its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.  Today, robots assemble products better, faster and often cheaper than manual laborers. More than 8 million U.S. airline flights a year are scheduled, guided and flown with the  assistance of advanced software.
