Picking Out Your New Eyeglasses: Terms to Know When Choosing Lenses

Tags: lenses lens

The verdict is in: You need glasses. But there are so many fabulous frames, looks, and Lenses to choose from, how do you know what’s right for you?

Never fear, Eyeglass World is here. Consider this your cheat sheet to help you navigate your way to finding the perfect lenses for your new eyeglasses. Even better, the helpful associates will guide you through these Lens options once you’re in-store!

Lens Type Terms

Single Vision lenses: This means that you only have one prescription in your lenses.

Bifocal lenses: These lenses contain two different powered prescriptions so you can use one part of the lens to see far away, and one for reading or up close work.

Trifocal lenses: Eyeglass lens that includes three different prescriptions—one for far, one for near, and one for in-between.

Progressive lensesThis lens corrects vision at all distances because it offers a seamless and smooth transition between the prescription you need to see close and the prescription you need to see far away. Because they look more like single vision lenses, many people prefer them to regular bifocals.

Polycarbonate Lenses: This lightweight, impact-resistant material is a great choice for your lenses if you are active, tough on glasses, or choosing a pair of eyeglasses for your children.

Trivex Lenses: This lens type offers superior vision correction and is lightweight, thin and durable.

High Index Lenses: This is a special, newer lens material type that’s thin and lightweight and a great choice if you have a strong prescription and don’t want thick (Coke bottle) lenses in your glasses.

Photocromic/Transitions Lenses: This type of lens looks clear when you’re inside, but if you go out into the bright sun, it “transitions” into a sunglass lens. This is a great option if you hate carrying a pair of prescription sunglasses along with you. It’s like two pairs of eyeglasses in one.

Polarized Lenses: This is s special type of lens that reduces glare. Often it’s put into sunglasses and is a great choice if you do a lot of driving or play sports where precision matters.

Lens Coating Terms

Anti-reflective Coatings: Choose this type of coating for your regular eyeglass lenses to help reduce glare, reflections, or halos. If you’re planning on getting your picture taken (or appearing in videos), you’ll want this type of coating so your glasses don’t interfere with your on-screen look.

Scratch-Resistant Coatings: With proper care, these coatings can help protect your glasses from scratching, but they don’t guarantee that your lenses won’t get scratched.

Tinted Lenses: You can add a tiny dose of color to your lenses with what’s called a tint. Sometimes it may not even be noticeable, but it can help you see better or even look better.

Ask your optician for all your options when it comes to choosing the best lenses for your new pairs of eyeglasses. Tell them about your lifestyle and let the friendly staff at Eyeglass World help find the lenses that are best for you!
