Taking Care of Your Eyes While Traveling

Vacation time is right around the corner. While you’re confirming reservations and packing your new swimsuit, why not make sure you’re prepared to take good care of your eyes while on vacation, too?

Here’s a packing list to keep your eyes healthy, wherever your travel plans take you.

Five Items to Pack on Your Next Vacation

Item One: Sunglasses

Whether you’re headed to the beach or the mountains, make sure you pack (and more importantly, wear) your sunglasses. Those sunglasses you saw at the department store looked cute, but make sure those fashion frames have ophthalmic quality Lenses. Most department store sunglasses don’t have the same caliber of UVA and UVB blocking lens coats as you get when you buy your sunglasses at an optical store. You can find a variety of stylish designer prescription sunglasses at Eyeglass World!

Item Two: Contact Lenses

If you use extended wear contact lenses, remember to pack your solutions. If you’re flying to your destination, don’t forget to either check your bag or purchase smaller size bottles so they don’t get confiscated at security.

Another option: ask your Eyeglass World optometrist about switching to daily lenses for your trip. There’s nothing more convenient than putting in a pair of fresh contact lenses every morning and throwing them away before you go to bed. Many daily contact lens brands are more breathable than extended wear lenses because they are thinner in texture. These lenses may feel more comfortable when you’re flying or out in the sun.

Item Three: Spare Glasses

If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure you pack a spare pair! If your eyes need a break from your contact lenses or if you lose, crush, or break your regular glasses, you’ll be a whole lot happier to have a spare pair already in your suitcase than to try to get them replaced during your vacation time.

Item Four: A Hat

Don’t make your sunglasses do all the work while you’re out in the sun or sailing the sea. A wide brimmed hat or cap can help offer your eyes even more protection from the sun, sand, or saltwater that could irritate or burn your eyes.

Item Five: Eye Makeup Remover

Ladies, if you wear Eye Makeup, don’t forget to take along your eye makeup remover. Makeup removal pads work well for travel because they aren’t counted as a liquid if you’re flying. Removing all of your eye makeup, every night, is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Little pieces of mascara and other eye makeup can sneak into your eyes while you sleep and cause irritation, redness and even infection.
