1- Your Suit Jacket/Blazer Is Too Big.
No man wants to look like he’s wearing his Dad’s jacket yet this is one of the most common mistakes in men’s styling. Sleeves way past the wrist. Jacket length almost to the knees. We’ve seen it all.
It all starts with the shoulders. The jacket sleeve should meet right where your arm meets your shoulder. The fabric from the seam should immediately drape straight down. A divot or bunching in the arm is a sign that the shoulder doesn’t fit properly.
2- Your Suit Jacket/Blazer Is Too Small.
Bursting at the seams. Buttons primed to fly across the room at the slightest wrong movement. Just as common of a blunder as wearing a jacket too big.
With the explosion of menswear in the mainstream recently – especially the popularity of the slim suit – a lot more men are getting into slimmer fits. Unfortunately, not every body type was meant to wear a slim-fitting suit. Some body types simply won’t look good in a slim suit. Dress your body type. Also, ‘slim-fitting’ should not be confused with ‘tight.’
3- Those Stitches In Your Jacket Aren’t Permanent.
Personally one my of biggest pet peeves. Leaving in the temporary stitching in your jacket vent should be a punishable crime. I’ll admit this is mostly a case of not knowing you had to. These are stitched closed to preserve the shape of the garment while in store or in transit. Remove the stitching from your suit jacket or blazer vents once you get it home. Same goes for the breast and side pockets.
4- We Can See Your Crew Neck.
The solution? Don’t wear a t-shirt underneath or wear a v-neck that doesn’t show. If you’re certain on going unbuttoned, don’t break the face framing, lines created by your shirt by leaving the neck of your crew neck t-shirt poking out the top.
5- Your Trousers Are Too Long.
Getting your trousers hemmed is a basic but essential need for ever man. Hemmed trousers can have dramatic effects, taking your suit from off the hook to tailored class. It’s one of the easiest ways to tell that a guy has put some thought and care into his appearance.
6- Untucked Dress Shirts.
Pick a side – casual or dressy – and stick with it. Don’t cross the streams. Nobody can or should attempt to pull off this look as it will never look good.
7- Million Dollar Suit with Ten Cent Shoes.
A good pair of shoes can absolutely transform an outfitand last a lifetime. Although there are countless ‘rules’ on how to match and wear your footwear with your suit the only real rule to follow would be matching quality, with quality. A proper pair of shoes are an investment worth making.
