Blogger Marika’s Travel Guide For Fashion Enthusiasts

We’re always on the lookout for interesting perspectives on Fashion and none are more riveting than those that come from a traveller’s books. It’s about so much more than the clothes for them; the culture, the sights, the anecdotes, the world-view, all of it makes for an interesting tale that remains etched in your memory forever.

And, that’s what we got when we caught up with Marika, a self-proclaimed gypsy and blogger of Cocco On The Road. She loves to travel with her daughter who won’t go anywhere without her little stuffed monkey; his name, as you can guess, is Cocco.

From her favourite Shopping destinations to her signature style, here’s a fun read that’s going to help you plan a high fashion itinerary.

Over To Marika

Having a sense of style is very important to me and despite my passion for traveling and writing, I always try to stay on top of the latest fashion trends. I follow Fashion Week runways and read articles and blogs written by my favourite fashionistas, but the thing I love most would have to be window shopping just to take it all in, in real time. In every other sphere, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but in fashion, considering your cover (or clothes, per se) can help you express yourself, it’s very liberating when you’ve managed to find your personal style.

During my many trips, my passion for shopping and travelling often came together in harmony, and I would return with pictures of the locales and some material memories too. The story for that bag my friends love, the shoes I’ve walked a thousand miles in, the dress with the beautifully intricate embroidery could be traced back to any number of places—Dubai, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Milan, Switzerland, Australia, French Polynesia, Maldives, wherever I go, I bring snapshots and a stylish souvenir back home.

It’s the little things that help cement a memory and while many people are crazy for magnets, me, I love beautiful sarongs or colourful scarves like the kinds I bought in Maldives and Polynesia from the local markets.

My Favourite Shopping Destinations: Dubai

Dubai, an ostentatious “candy shop”. I have already written a travelogue on things to do and see in Dubai (Where dreams come true). The city is filled with shopping malls that have it all: Stores, restaurants, bars, hotels, children’s playgrounds, ski slopes, ice skating, aquariums—they’re like mini townships.

My favourite of them all is the Dubai Mall. It’s right alongside the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, so you can get a little sightseeing done while you get your fashion fix.

There are stores of every kind from the luxurious Chanel, Chloé, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton to the fashionable prêt-à-porter like Guess, Etro, La Martina, and Mango.

Me, I walked right into Louis Vuitton to pick up a bag from my favourite brand!

Destination 2: London

I prefer to visit London every year during Christmas. It’s an annual weekend getaway packed with museums, attractions, and shopping sprees accompanied by lights, colours, Christmas carols, and dotted shops.

The go-to place for fashionistas: Oxford Street! It’s a haven for locals and tourists because the stores, malls, bars and restaurants are aplenty, and one day might just not be enough to cover it all.

Also, I’d like to give a special mention to Harrods on Brompton Road. It looks like a posh bonbonnière at Christmas with all its fairy lights and bright colours.

And, since Christmas comes only once a year, I allow myself a luxury indulgence. Last year I bought a pair of Jimmy Choos, because, every girl deserves a pair of Jimmy Choo Shoes.

Destination 3: Hong Kong

Landmark street has all the high fashion and prêt-à-porter shops with luxurious merchandise that glistens through the well-lit windows. What’s more, it’s close to Causeway Bay where tradition and modernity combine to represent Hong Kong’s spirit.

Only in New York and Hong Kong have I seen such a bustling crowd of people on the street. Here, I bought a Gucci bag because their handbags are refined, elegant, timeless, and therefore a great investment.

You’ve Got To Love Online Shopping

If you don’t have the time to head to the store or even just need some retail therapy in the comfort of your home (because you can’t wear jammies to Gucci), online shopping saves the day. I do this all the time, especially for gifting purposes. Sometimes the gift’s just from me to me.

And that’s how I discovered obsessory, and when they asked me to write for them, I was more than glad. Strongly structured, divided into product pages for men, women, accessories, sales, and even a blog spot, the filters help you narrow down your selection to the last detail—colour, price, and store even. I picked up a bag and a pair of shoes from them so yes, tried, tested, and approved.

Shopping, wherever, whenever, however, should be a pleasure and with that, I wish you a good shopping experience until we meet again.
