Woman On Top: Victoria Beckham & The Sexy Scowl Of Success

At some point I thought it was OK to wear a PVC catsuit.” Well, while she had quite a few fashion fails during the 90s and early 2000s (catsuits, handkerchief tops and skirts, and tons of tacky animal print), Victoria Beckham’s journey to becoming the Designer of The Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2011 certainly took the industry by surprise. In the lead up to International Women’s Day, we break down her journey to success that’s sure to inspire young entrepreneurs and girls everywhere.

Once Upon A Spice Girl

To be honest, even as one of the lesser-known Spice Girls, Victoria was very on brand with the whole ‘girl power’ vibe the group had going on for them. She brought the Posh from her music videos to the design table and over time, this became the DNA of brand Victoria Beckham, the talented British fashion designer no one saw coming.

The Mean Victoria Beckham?

Many were quick to judge her for not smiling enough, being elitist even as a designer, always projecting a cold and distant demeanor… but, in a world full of men when a woman decides to wear the pants and be a #BossLady to run an empire, why judge? Being successful in the cut-throat business of fashion has never been easy.

Even as women, it took us some time to warm up to Victoria because that’s how we’re wired to think about “bossy” women; in time, you realise if he’s not being an a**, then she’s not being a b*tch either. Anyone else reminded of other wildly strong leading ladies like… I don’t know… Anna Wintour, Kirsten Stewart, Anna Kendrick, Megan Fox? Accuse them of having a Resting B*tch Face all you want, successful women still have their feet on the ground, they just wear better shoes.

It’s amazing what you can do in culottes…those ballet classes are paying off! Thank u @edwardbarsamian and @voguemagazine! Kisses from LA x vb

The Success Story That Shut Everyone Up

Her first stint was a limited line of jeans with Rock & Republic that was launched under the brand name, VB Rocks. What followed was a book deal, That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between, and then a line of sunglasses and more denim, finally leading up to the famous Victoria Beckham dresses that were released and became a success in 2008.

She began participating in New York Fashion Week and gained more patrons, year-on-year. By 2012, she had expanded her empire to include an affordable line called Victoria by Victoria Beckham, and established a primo spot in the fragrances, eyewear, and denim segments.

Now her apparel and accessories are stocked in over 500 stores across 60 countries, and celebrities like Eva Longoria, Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate BeckinsaleAnne Hathaway, Miranda Kerr, Cameron Diaz, Kate WinsletNaomi Watts, Olivia Palermo, Michelle Williams, Cheryl Cole, Jennifer LopezBlake Lively, Selena Gomez, and even Queen Bey (Beyoncé) love and wear her clothes… phew!

5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Be Surprised People Love Her Designs

  • Everything that I design I would wear myself,” Victoria once said. The mantra worked on many levels: Women who wanted to dress like fashion royalty, dress like Posh Spice, dress like a WAG, dress like a successful entrepreneur, or dress in luxury labels, all began shopping for Victoria Beckham’s designs. Who wouldn’t want to take their pick from the wardrobe of one of the most photographed women in the world?
  • The style was a refreshing change from all the gimmicky over-the-top designs fashion houses felt compelled to experiment with to make a statement at the time. But, not Victoria. Her clothes have never apologised for being simple, and they rely on cut, tailoring, and an artful use of colour to make the sale. It’s the modern language the working women of today identify with.

  • With a distinct and confident (not elitist) style in her clothes, women with the same #BossLady attitude came back for more, season after season. If you notice, the modest knee-length hems have a very upper-class vibe, as do the silk blouses, structured jackets, and hints of corsetry. You could throw on a fascinator and head to the Derby in any Victoria Beckham outfit and fit right in.
  • Quality is key. If your product is not made well, even the most fabulous designs can’t save you, especially in the luxury space where people are paying a lot of money for your stuff. The Victoria Beckham Ready-To-Wear collection is primarily handmade in the UK; the Victoria by Victoria Beckham, and the Denim collections are handmade in Europe. The Accessories and Eyewear are both handcrafted in Italy.

  • She evolved. Yes, as tides are changing, so is Victoria’s aesthetic. Once all about form-fitting clothes, the designer’s been seen advocating toned down luxury. This means a release of minimalist designs that don’t try too hard like slouchy trousers, chiffon skirts, oversized blazers and off-the-shoulder blouses, all of which were spotted in her AW17 showcase.

Making More Than Just A Fashionable Statement

And when the time came, she used her position and power for good. No fur for this PETA supporter, Victoria’s worked extensively on the Save The Children campaign, is a patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and even joined the Ban Bossy initiative to advocate leadership roles for girls.

If she isn’t a Woman On Top worth taking cue from, we don’t know who is!
