Mindfulness for Beginners Guide

Practicing Mindfulness can dramatically change your life. This Mindfulness for Beginners Guide will give you quick changes you can make to feel peaceful and tranquil.

When you are constantly feeling busy, it can be because of your mindset. Here’s why:

Two people can have the same exact schedule for the day but look at it in two completely different ways. One person may feel stressed, frantic, or overwhelmed. While the other person, with the same amount of work, may feel grateful, at ease, and peaceful. It all depends on our mindset.

Here’s the thing though, it’s completely normal to sometimes feel stressed or overwhelmed. You wouldn’t be human if you never felt those things. And that’s okay. But if you are like me, you would like to feel peaceful and at ease more often.

I admit, I have been on vacation with no responsibilities and felt stressed. I remember being on the beach, probably the most relaxing place I could think of and I realized that my mind was racing with thoughts. My mind felt busy. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much you have going on, it’s your mindset that affects how you feel.

One way to remedy this is by being mindful. Living in the moment. Are there times when you have to think towards to future and plan? Yes. Are there times you should reminisce about the past? Of course! But if you are constantly thinking about the past or the future it clouds your mind.

Mindfulness for Beginners

  • Focus on the present moment. You can do this even with small things: washing the dishes, walking to your car, making dinner, etc. Pay attention to what you can hear, touch, smell, and taste while doing these things. If your mind wanders, gently guide it back.
  • Set aside time every day to reflect and plan.
  • Try meditation.
  • Eat without technology.
  • Focus on the rise and fall of your breath.
  • Practice yoga.
  • Pause and take a breath in between tasks.
  • Take your time eating. Chew your food slowly and really taste what you are eating.
  • Do nothing. It’s okay to just sit and watch the world around you.
  • Put away your phone and computer an hour before you go to bed.
  • Spend time in nature and be really be an observer of the natural world.
  • Try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique:
    • Name:
      • 5 things you can see
      • 4 things you can touch
      • 3 things you can hear
      • 2 things you can smell
      • 1 things you can taste

These techniques may seem small and insignificant, but they can make a huge impact. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You will need to continually practice these things to make a noticeable difference in your life.

I hope this Mindfulness for Beginners Guide helps you find a little more peace in your life. I know that I need these reminders quite often. Feel free to bookmark or print this list and come back to it as often as you would like. You may also want to check out the article I wrote titled Free UCLA Mindfulness Meditations.
