Training is Better With Friends

Another week down and I’m on fire with my weekly Training recaps. However… these are just about all that’s up on the blog lately. But given how hectic January has been, I’ve got to be okay with this – this has been a pretty crazy few weeks in life. But oh-em-gee the training is rolling along better than it ever was last year. It’s not perfect but I am still pretty proud of the balancing act. All the plates are spinning in the air, and although some are teetering, none have come crashing down… yet.

First, I’ll just say that going into the week I was kind of exhausted from doing really well on my workouts HERE. And I was in between au pairs so my childcare situation was like a patchwork quilt of time off work, my mom, my dad, my former au pair who lives nearby, and the kids’ dad. It’s a tad stressful.

The new au pair arrived during this week I’m recapping, and that also creates a transition – getting to know her, showing her around, training her in the school/childcare routine, brushing up on my French skills… it’s a lot during the transition. I’m hoping that life starts to regulate a bit after next week.

So the training of the week went down like this:

Monday – There was a planned swim on the schedule. But I didn’t get in the swim – I took a rest day. I was coming off of a big Weekend of workouts, combined with working all day on Sunday. I needed the rest. I’m sorry, coach.

I was also glad for the extra time because I was busy getting the room and house ready for the new au pair to move in.

So.Much.To.Do.

Tuesday – An hour and a half on the bike trainer. I got up crazy early, did the bike workout, and then had a long commute to work. It was an awesome day.

Wednesday – Well, track shmack – I didn’t get to my weekly track workout. This is the problem with evening workouts – I’m not always where I thought I’d be at the time I’d thought I’d be there. I was intending to go to track but had to pick up my new au pair from the train station. My daughter and I had a fun trip to DC and then we were thrilled to welcome the new au pair to our house!

Thursday – My schedule called for an hour and a half on the bike, then a 2 mile run on the treadmill. I had an early commute so it just didn’t happen in the morning. So it was evening or nothing.

I will admit, I was tired. This was tough, but I was so glad it was done.

My treadmill run was at 8:45/mile average pace – pretty good to knock out just before 11pm!

Friday – Here starts my weekend of working out with friends. I met up with Blake and Wiebke at his pool, and swam 2400 yards.

I had some issues with foot and calf cramps during the end of the swim, so we recuperated in the hot tub for a few minutes after the workout.

It was tons of fun to meet up with friends for a Friday night workout! I ended up staying at my friend Wiebke’s house since I was about an hour from home, so then in the morning….

Saturday – Trainer time. My plan called for 1:44 on the trainer, but I only got in 1:37 because my laptop kept dropping my Wahoo KICKR and other sensors. It was pretty frustrating – my iPad doesn’t do that but my laptop seems fussy with the Bluetooth. But it was tons of fun to get in the workout with a buddy!

I rushed back the hour home to have a haircut and then I worked a concert that night. Busy day!

Sunday – I met my group to run 12 miles, and my friend Lester joined me. Well, he came with me and then ran way faster than me and my group! Our race pace is the 9 minute mile group, and so we do our long runs at 9:20-9:30. Let’s just say he was done, fueled, and waiting when we got back!

So afterwards I decided to “cross train”. Ha!

So that’s that. The rest of Sunday I had a meeting with some other triathlete friends about an initiative we’re working on, then cooked dinner and spent time working on the new au pair’s schedule and other business. And that was my week!

Check it out – not a single solo workout on the weekend! How unusual for someone who does a lot of training at home alone when kids are sleeping.

It was a fun week and a great way to offset work and life stress.

Do you work out with friends or others?
