Meet Dr. Henstrom of Utah Facial Plastics

Meet Dr. Henstrom of Utah Facial Plastics, top facial plastic surgeon in SLC, Utah.

My name is Dr. Douglas Henstrom, born and raised in Provo, Utah. I originally got interest in medicine years ago, in fact my greatest mentor was a plastic surgeon in Utah Valley by the name of Blane Hirsche, he’s actually my father-in-law. I spent summers working in his office and learning the art of plastic surgery, listening and watching him, seeing how he effected other people’s lives in so many different ways, both there as well as with his mission trips.

After I graduated from high school I went to BYU, and I actually played football at BYU. I enjoyed that very much and that process helped prepare me. I was accepted to med school at a few different places but the place I chose to go to was the University of Iowa for a number of reasons. It’s one of the best medical school in the country and I felt that would be a great opportunity for me personally as well as for my family, that was just beginning. After I completed medical school, I then went and did my residency in head and neck surgery for five years at the Mayo Clnic in Rochester, MN. That was a great experience and it taught me all about operating and taking care of patients with head and neck concerns in so many different ways.

I went and did a fellowship after my residency training in Boston, at Harvard’s Facial plastics fellowship. I spent almost six years as the director of University of Iowa’s facial plastic and reconstructive surgery department and it wasn’t until recently that I decided to make the move and transition to come back here, come back to Utah and bring my family back home to join Dr. Thompson in his practice.

I was trained in the full breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, certainly do pretty much everything. One of the things that I do that is very unique, is my training in treating patients with facial nerve paralysis, doing things for them that other physicians can’t. That was some of the unique training I got in Boston. The facility I trained at there is one of the premier facial nerve centers in the country, one of the premier ones in the world.

I love seeing the difference you can make in patient’s lives. Being able to change people and make people feel better about themselves, whether it’s trauma patients, victims of domestic abuse, whether it’s helping patients with facial paralysis, whether it’s helping patients with aesthetic concerns and make the changes that they want. It could be congenital defects. Doing that and having a person feel better about themselves when leaving your office is very rewarding.

I offer the full gammit of facial procedures but the ones we’re doing a lot of…otoplasty’s, facelifts, rhinoplasty’s, blepharoplasty’s, surgery on patient’s eyelids. We do the lower or upper eyelids to help give them a little more youthful appearance.

I’m very excited to have been invited to join Dr. Thompson and his practice at Utah Facial Plastics. Scott and I share the same vision for how to take care of patients, what we want to do with the practice, how to grow it within the premier facial plastics center in the Intermountain West.
