Gluteus To The Maximus: Horse Cycles Gravel+ For ENVE

Thomas Callahan of New York’s Horse Cycles was recently approached by ENVE’s Kevin McCelland to create a fat-tired all-roader to showcase their new G Series Handlebar and Fork and in doing so, paid homage to one of our all-time favorite builders.

The Horse Gravel+ is a fitting response to the brief, and Thomas also used the opportunity to pay his respects to Ezra Caldwell of Fast Boy Cycles who, before he was tragically taken by cancer in 2014, built some of our most-loved bikes.

One of those was Ezra’s Assless Bike, built without a seat post so he could still ride during his illness and featured a blood-red patch against an antique white frame, which Thomas emulated at the Horse Cycles in-house paint shop on the ENVE bike.

The ENVE bike is an indomitable monster of a machine, created for a rider who knows how to push a bike through its paces. The focus of the frame design was the new 12cm flared bars and the 50mm rake forks, which can accept a tire up to 50mm wide.

The rubber, in this case, is a pair of 27.5×2.25″ WTB Riddler tires, on ENVE’s G27 rims and White Industries hubs — who also supplied the headset and cranks. PAUL’s new flat mount Klampers were installed, as well as their skewers.

The frame’s built with Columbus Life and Zona tubes and a hand-turned tapered head tube, with a 73mm T47 bottom bracket down below, a rock-solid platform for Kevin’s pedaling. Maybe you’ll spot a hand-stamped brass badge on the bottom bracket, too.

All of the bikes that leave the Horse Cycles stables these days have been very tidy machines: simultaneously strong and subtle. Ezra would approve. Kevin’s latest is no exception, a perfect application of ENVE’s new G-Series components.
