Not only doing Yoga asanas practice enough to become a yogi in your life, something is a very really important part which you never neglects, its yogic diet. In itself doing Yoga asanas practicing is one of the most important rules, but it complete without yogic diet, balanced diet is good for yoga life, eating the right Food is very important part of living a yogic life. Everything we eat, for our soul not only for physical well being but also our emotions and thoughts, because everything connected to our body, mind, and soul.

Food to Eat Before and after yoga

Eating before and after yoga is asked several times by most yoga students and practitioners. Yoga is not like any other kind of exercise and you will enjoy doing yoga if your stomach is empty. There should be a time interval between the last meal and yoga practice for at least 2 hours.

Why not eat before Yoga?

While you doing yoga asanas and your body moves in forward and reverse bending poses, there is pressure creates on abdominal organs which may push the food in upwards and it’s resulting in a feeling of great discomfort. At the time of doing yoga practice most of the blood circulation will be diverted to the digestive tract.

What to Eat?

If you are started yoga, don’t change diet in a single day but gradually moves towards a yogic diet.
This will keep you healthy and you will become more self-aware with yoga practice, you will be able to exercise more control over your eating.
Yogic diet classifies them according to the effect they have on the body and mind, into three types – sattva, rajas, and tamas. “Tamasic” food is that kind of food which makes us tired, while “Rajasic” food is that kind of food which brings about restlessness. Whereas, “Sattvic” food is that kind of food which makes you feel light, energetic and passionate.

The basis of sattva is the concept of non harming means not to involve killing or harming of animals. Sattvic diets follow the nature, its natural food, and foods that are ripened and grown naturally. If you see in yogic way Sattva is a quality of love, awareness, connection, and peace with all conscious beings.

The yogic food that we eat that should be cooked with love and positive feelings. Eating a yogic diet that increases our prana and higher state of consciousness.

Yogic Diet Follow:

  • Fruits of all types, especially those that are naturally sweet
  • All vegetables, except onions and garlic
  • maple, molasses, Natural, raw sugar,
  • Whole grains, especially oats, wheat, and rice
  • Beans, tofu, mung, aduki
  • Herbal tea, lemon tea, lime tea
  • Sweet spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, mint, basil, turmeric, ginger, cumin, fennel
  • Plant-based oils, like sesame, sunflower, and olive oil
  • Nuts and seeds, yet not salted or overly roasted

Food not to eat:

  • All nog veg. foods
  • Stale or overly cooked foods
  • White flour, white sugar
  • Fried foods
  • Garlic, onions, spicy foods
  • Animal fats, margarine
  • Microwaved foods
  • Alcohol, tobacco, stimulants
  • junk food, artificial sweeteners, soda
