Hibiscus Tea for High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular conditions. Those who present hypertension are at high risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, requiring constant medical supervision. Medical treatments can keep the blood pressure under control but they often have unpleasant side-effects. In such situations, dietary changes represent the key to the problem. As you will have the opportunity to read below, hibiscus tea is an effective weapon against high blood pressure. Consumed on a daily basis, it lowers blood pressure and protects the heart against further damage.

Hibiscus sabdariffa, a tea blend for hypertension

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tea blend that is used all over the world, including in Iran, Thailand, Mexico, Egypt and Sudan. The tea is appreciated for its unique taste but also for its beneficial properties over the general health. The plant contains an important quantity of plant acids, as well as antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients. In an article published in Gaia Herbs, highlighting the uses and safety of hibiscus sabdariffa, the tea blend is presented as a traditional remedy against hypertension (Iran).

Studies confirm hibiscus tea as an efficient remedy against high blood pressure

According to an article published in AgroFOOD, hibiscus tea is one of the most common herbal tea blends consumed worldwide. It has antioxidant properties and the studies on animal models confirmed its beneficial properties with regard to blood pressure. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that hibiscus tea has the ability to reduce overall cholesterol levels, protecting against atherosclerosis.

The authors of the article draw attention to the components of hibiscus tea that lower blood pressure. These are actually flavonoids, substances with antioxidant properties (anthocyanins). Other substances contained in the hibiscus tea blend, which present similar properties, include: luteolin, quercetin, gossypicyanin and hibiscin. Hibiscus tea has also been tested on actual patients, being both tolerable and safe to use. In the future, researchers are hoping to use it as a therapeutic agent for hypertension.

Boston researchers have published a study in The Journal of Nutrition and Disease, revealing that hibiscus tea could be used as an efficient remedy against high blood pressure. The study was undertaken on patients who suffered from mild hypertension, as well as on those who were pre-hypertensive. In total, there were 65 participants to the study, aged between 30 and 70, who did not receive any treatment for their condition. For a period of six weeks, they were split into two groups; a group received hibiscus tea, while the second was given a placebo alternative.

The administration of hibiscus tea lowered both systolic and diastolic pressure, as well as provided a positive change in the mean arterial pressure. Those who had a higher systolic blood pressure benefited the most from the administration of hibiscus tea. The positive effects of the tea blend were not influenced by additional factors (age, gender or dietary supplements). The authors of the study concluded that the daily administration of hibiscus tea could lower blood pressure, especially in patients who also suffered from type-2 diabetes (similar effect to hypotensive drugs).

Final word

Hibiscus tea is not only a delicious beverage but also an excellent weapon against one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, meaning high blood pressure. Consumed on a daily basis, it can lower blood pressure and improve the outcome for hypertensive patients.
