Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy:

Renewable energy is the energy that is derived from a limitless source, which is naturally replenished on a human timescale, in contrast to fossil fuels derived from finite source. Renewable energy often provides energy in four important areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling, transportation, and rural energy services.

There are five commonly used renewable energy sources:

i) Biomass: Together with snow and rain, sunlight is essential for plant growth. Organic matter that constitutes plants is referred to as biomass, which can be utilized to generate electricity, chemicals or fuels to power vehicles.
ii) Hydropower: Utilizes moving water to produce electricity. Moving water creates high energy that can be harnessed and turned into power.
iii) Geothermal
iv) Wind: This takes advantage of wind motion to generate electricity. Wind motion is brought about by the heat from the sun, and rotation of the earth, mainly via the Carioles Effect.
v) Solar: taps heat from the sun to produce energy for generation of electricity, heating, lighting homes and commercial buildings.
vi) Hydrogen & Fuel Cells.

Advantages of Renewable Energy:

Renewables are great type of energy because they don’t produce exhausts and won’t pollute the planet by emitting toxic chemicals and gases. Some regions in the past have grown wealthy as a result of their proximity to coal, gas, and oil reserves. On the other hand, not all places had access to fossil fuels, which have made economic development difficult in some areas. Paradoxically, nearly every town has access to sunlight, wind, and the geothermal power from the Earth, so harnessing these sources of renewable energy could be a great democratizing force, which offers inexpensive and plentiful power to every corner of the globe. Renewable energy facilities generally require less maintenance than traditional generators. When more renewable energy facilities are constructed, public health is improved as there are fewer pollutants.

Disadvantages of Renewable Energy:

Renewable energy depends mainly on weather conditions to be able to harness any energy. In case atmospheric conditions are not good enough, renewable energy technologies would lack the ability to generate any electricity. The electricity generation capacity is still not large enough. There are still obstacles to generate large quantities of power in renewable energy technology compared to traditional forms of energy generation like fossil fuel. A huge financial support is required to build renewable energy facilities. These plants require upfront investments to build as well as they have high maintenance expenses and require careful planning and implementation.
