Body Beast Review: The Cheapest Way To Lose Inches And Get Ripped!

For those who are fans of Hammer and Chisel’s Sagi Kalev comes Body Beast, Beachbody’s 90 day weight lifting video series. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like this program because, I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of lifting heavy weight in general and prefer the body weight movements offered with workouts like P90X. What I found was something unexpected, as I began looking forward to Sagi’s entertaining training style (and the weight training workouts as well!).

Body Beast Review: Basic Info

First, let’s look at some of the basics:

  • 90 day program
  • Requires freeweights, EZ curl bar, bench, and Pull Up Bar or resistance bands
  • Standard Beachbody-style calendar and eating plan
  • 12 workouts broken up into three one-month blocks
    • Block One: Basic Lifting
    • Block Two: Advanced Lifting
    • Block Three: Rotational and Final Toning

The way the program works is that you begin with four DVD’s of basic lifting that will get you acclimated to the framework of lifting. I enjoyed this because I was never into lifting, but Body Beast starts you off with easy movements, and you don’t have to worry about starting with light weight because, well, you’re at home and no one is going to see you!

As you progress through the 90 day program, the movements get a little more intense, but it’s exciting to see how 20 pounds a few weeks ago feels so much lighter! I can also say I was able to do 10 pull ups in a row for the first time in my life after two months of doing Body Beast!

Body Beast Weightlifting Myth

Sure, it’s easy to think that heavier people or women would “bulk up” too much and that a weightlifting program like Body Beast wouldn’t give you the kind of body you want. The truth is, weightlifting is one of the best and quickest ways to lose unwanted pounds for heavier individuals. And for women who are worried about looking too masculine, it’s simply not true. You have to dedicate a lifetime of intense (more intense than Body Beast) weightlifting and supplement training to look like those women on the covers of muscle building magazines.

The truth about Body Beast is that you will keep a feminine look while toning your core, legs, and arms (my wife calls them “wedding arms”).

Sagi Kalev Might Be My Favorite Beachbody Trainer

To this point, I have been a big Shaun T fa, but I think Sagi might be my new favorite. For those familiar with other Beachbody programs, Sagi is the male half of the Hammer and Chisel series, which I was a big fan of. With Body Beast, Sagi is a little more in his element and working as the only trainer. His Israeli accent is charming and he has tons of funny phrases that make me laugh and almost forget that I’m working out. He’s unintentionally funny, which I really enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, he has great intensity, maybe not to the level of Shaun T, but enough to keep me motivated and push me through the tough workouts.

Body Beast: Worth A Try

Body Beast is one of the least expensive Beachbody programs. I did have to buy the EZ Curl Bar (I already had the pull up bar and workout bench) and a few plates, but I have talked to some people who were able to modify the program to where they used only their free weights and didn’t use the EZ Curl Bar (this is the one I got which is cheap and works fine, then I bought a few plates at a second hand store).

Body Beast Pricing:

  • Body Beast Base Kit: $49.85
  • Body Beast Deluxe Kit: $103.81
  • Body Beast Ultimate Kit: $163.81

For me, introducing weightlifting in a familiar 90 day program was exactly what I needed. Body weight exercises will always be great forms of exercise, but for anyone looking to really see results, weightlifting is a great option and Body Beast doesn’t ask that you do anything you would have to worry about injuring yourself. For a minimal investment, I know you’ll see results and, like me, might just find out you really enjoy working out with weights!
