How Some of Your Own Family Members Are Unknowingly Holding You Back

How Some Of Your Own Family Members Are Unknowingly Holding You Back

For many people today, their Family is their strength. These are the individuals that have supported them through the most difficult of times and helped them become the successful individuals that they are today. There is no denying the positive impact that family can have on many individuals. However, it is important that you are not blinded by your loved and adoration for your family and that you can see first had situations where your own Family Members may be unknowingly holding you back.

While it can be difficult to see sometimes, there are so many situations where family members be intentionally, or unintentionally, doing things to hold you back from being as successful as you deserve to be. In some situations these are only minor setbacks, in others the wrong family member can completely change the way that you are able to interact with the world around you.

One of the best things that you can do in order to make sure this isn’t happening to you, is to look for some of the most common situations where family members actually hold their loved ones back. It may be hard to accept about your own family, but if you are able to look at the situation objectively, many times you can see just how much your familial relationships are impacting your own personal goals and pursuits. Here are some of the ways that family members tend to hold one another back from time to time. Keep these situations in mind so you can determine for yourself whether your family is helping or hurting your journey to success.

Your Parents…That Think Everything You Do is Extraordinary (Even When It’s Not)

Having supporting parents can be a great blessing for anyone who dreams big and who is looking to make some big accomplishments. However, there is a fine line between having parents who are supportive and having parents who think that everything you do is extraordinary, even when it is not. It is very common for parents to think their children are God’s gift to the world. However, there is a difference between adoring parents and ones who are simply not grounded in reality.

If you have those parents that think you can do no wrong, even when you do something wrong, you may be surprised to find that they are doing more harm than good. Having someone tell you that every mistake you make is “alright” and being afraid of giving you hard truths can really prevent you from getting the tough love you need to be successful.

Truly successful individuals are not coddled their entire lives. They are taught lessons, given support when needed and told they are wrong, when it is needed as well. Your parents may think that they are doing everything they can to build your confidence and help you along the way, but if they are being too unrealistically positive about you and your accomplishments they may be doing the opposite.

If you are one of those individuals who relies solely on your parents support and opinions, because it is always so positive, then it may be time to distance yourself. Being overly attached to your parents not only puts you in a bubble where you only hear their positive feedback, but it can prevent you from going outside your comfort zone and trying new things. Even grown adults can be too attached to their parents, especially if those parents are nothing but encouraging all of the time.

If you suspect that your parents are toeing the line of thinking you are too great, it may be time to try to find other more honest and realistic pillars of support. This can be a tough break to make, especially since most overly-positive parents only think they are helping. However, if you stay within their rose colored glasses too-long, it can start to impact your own realistic view of the world and prevent you from viewing and interacting with reality in the way it actually is.

The Jealous Family Members Who Constantly Poke Holes In Your Ideas/Plans

No matter how close you may think you are to someone or how much you love them, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t jealous of you. Jealous family members, especially siblings and close cousins are nothing new. In fact, most families have a few jealous members in them. However, it is important that these jealous individuals aren’t getting in the way of your success.

You shouldn’t underestimate the impact that jealous family can have on you and your success. If this jealous individual is constantly poking holes in your ideas or your plans, they may be holding you back more than you ever imagined. These individuals may be trying to frame their reaction to your success as “tough love” or trying to help, but in reality if their actions stem from jealously, you need to remove their negativity from your life.

If you constantly have someone being negative about your dreams or plans, it won’t necessarily motivate you to do more or to do better, it can cause you to doubt yourself for no real reason. You need to be willing to stand up for yourself and realize when other people are simply jealous of your ambition.

Even more individuals can sometimes be jealous of your success. You may notice these people trying to ignore, ridicule or downplay your success once you achieve it, instead of supporting and congratulating you. You may finally find the success you have worked for, only to be met with indifference or a lack of support from someone you thought loved and supported you. These individuals are jealous and their actions and attitude can truly have an impact on your life and your future success.

Jealous individuals can be some of the most toxic people in your world. Unfortunately, many times these people are also your family members and the ones that you spend the most time with. Just because someone is a family member, it doesn’t mean that they are always looking out for your best interest. Make sure that you are on the lookout for jealous individuals and aware of the impact they can have on your life. You may love this person, but it doesn’t mean that their jealousy isn’t getting in the way of your success.

Why You Need to Make the Decision to Completely Ignore Them

Spotting potentially toxic family members in your life is only half of the battle. You need to make sure that you are reacting to these family members in the right manner. There are some individuals that will accept an honest conversation, and some that will be willing to change. There are others that you will need to ignore. It all depends on the situation.

Depending on the family member, you may or may not be able to completely ignore these individuals, but you can start creating a healthy distance between you and these family members. You may want to explain your decision and how some separation can benefit you personally, or you may want to just make a clean break.

This can be difficult as most people don’t want to have tension with their family members. However, you need to be able to take an objective look at this individual and they way that their actions, beliefs or thoughts are impacting your own life. Sacrificing your potential success isn’t worth the consequences just to make a family member feel loved and appreciated. Sometimes you need to stick up for what is right for you.

Family can be complicated, and choosing to ignore a family member, or ignore their advice can sometimes be very difficult, yet very necessary. The good news is, typically the earlier on you can spot an issue with a family member holding you back, and the earlier you can react to this issue, the better off you will be.
