Mercure Singapore Bugis Hotel

Ranked as the most expensive city in the world over the past four years picking a great Hotel when with reasonable prices in Singapore can be difficult. Scarcity of land means that the rooms in Singapore hotels are also smaller compared to other South East Asian Hotels for the amount you are paying.  That said, Singapore is a vibrant city to explore with exciting food, attractions and shopping options.

We tend to visit Singapore once every couple of years or so and recently we spent 3 days 4 nights there. When ever we go there, accommodation happens to be one of our main concern , as despite many many great hotels available in Singapore, it is really difficult to find a hotel that offers what we would describe as value for money.

While for some people, accommodation when travelling is just a place to sleep and rest, for us, it makes part of the travel experience. For this reason, it is important that the hotel we choose to stay in have all the amenities that would make our stay pleasant and comfortable. We are lucky that this time around, we found Mercure Singapore Bugis Hotel.

The Hotel

Mercure Singapore Bugis Hotel is a 4 star hotel that offers great accommodation and facilities at a great price. As we have never been to the hotel before, for the price we paid, we did not expect to get much out of it. We have been an Accor member for quite sometime and would sometime ended up booking hotels from the group of hotels under Accor management as we know what to expect from its hotels.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were surprised to see the hotel. While the foyer was a little small and doesn’t have the usual grandeur, it is nice, neat and minimalist. Check in process was brief , the concierge were friendly and we were promptly taken to our room.

What we like about the hotel are the facilities made available.  The 24-hour gym boasts two treadmills, a bike, a stair climber, a rowing machine , free weights, yoga mats and stability balls. If that is not enough, there are at least 5 local gymnasiums within walking distance to the hotel that offers casual visits at a reasonable price.

The hotel also has a pool located at one of the top floors of the hotel. A refreshing dip in the 25-metre infinity pool is the perfect way to cool down after spending the whole day exploring Singapore City. Not to mention, the is also a jacuzzi for you can soak in and relax. In between swimming and soaking, you can also grab a cocktail from the pool side bar. The Mercure Singapore Bugis also boast a stunning roof top garden. The garden has a few sitting area where you can just chill and enjoy the sunset.

The Room

We stayed at the Executive Loft Room for 3 nights. It was an experience for Ida as she has never stayed in a loft style room and she absolutely love the look and design of a loft style room.

The Executive Loft Room is perfect for 2 persons and it is quote spacious for Singapore standard. The room comes with a queen size bed located on the mezzanine level, while downstairs  is equipped with a sofa, desk, flat screen TV, nespresso machine, fridge and a walk-in rain shower in the bathroom. The room is stylish designed with floor-to-ceiling windows over looking the magnificent view of Singapore city to the artwork and colourful contemporary design, eye-catching features.

That said, the size of the toilet might be a bit of a struggle for someone who is very tall and quite large. On top of that, the queen size bed is placed on the floor. So for those who struggle to get in and out of the floor, might find this a bit of a struggle as it did for Sam. However, for me I had no issue with having the bed on the floor. Nonetheless, the bed was very comfortable, the sheets are soft  with great lighting and perfect size TV.

The turndown service at Mercure Singapore Bugis was also great. The room was thoroughly cleaned and we never once had to request for any replenishment or replacement.

The best add on to the room was the complementary usage of a mobile phone. This is great for those who do not want to spend money on getting a Singaporean SIM card. With the mobile phone, you can use the internet and make local and international calls. We found this extremely useful for our trip as map use and phone calls does not eat into our own phone battery life.

Our room rate did not come with a breakfast, so we could not rate the breakfast. However, we totally didn’t mind as we preferred to have our breakfast of Kaya Toasts and half boiled eggs at the nearby Kopitiam

The Location

Mercure Hotel Bugis is located in the Bencoolen/Bugis area in Singapore. We prefer to stay in this area as it has a strategic location. Orchard Road is accessible by taxi (5 mins ride). Little India , Haji Lane and Bugis Junction are within 10 minutes walk from our hotel.

On top of that Mercure Bugis Singapore is located right next to Bugis+ and Bugis Junction shopping centre. So there are plenty to do, see, eat and shop here. To top it off, the Bugis Street Market is also located just a stone throw away from here. Plus, there are plenty of things to do at this area at night as well.

The Prices

We paid $SGD150 ($A148) per night for our room. Which in our opinion is a steal for the location, the size of our room and the amenities.
